Baby Gate Issue - Detaching from wall

So we have a Regalo gate for the top of our stairs...

We have a wall on one side and a banister on the other, so this gate seemed perfect. My first attempt at installing it, I think I drilled into the drywall instead of a stud, so it came out of the wall pretty quickly. We then reinstalled closer to the edge and it certainly FELT like I was drilling into a stud (about 1.25 inches from the corner). BUT it's come out of the wall AGAIN! What am I doing wrong???

I would use a stud finder. When you do the knock test does it sound like a stud? I would guess you aren't hitting a stud. I would also suggest butterfly anchors (I don't know if that's the technical name but that's what I call them. They are like plugs for the screws that open up behind the wall to hold whatever you are securing in place better.

Yea, use a stud finder to find the stud. You should be able to feel the difference between screwing into drywall vs. a stud. You may also be using the wrong hardware, how long are the screws you're using? If there isn't a stud there, you will need anchors. We had this issue. I think DH put something behind the dry wall to give it more support. I don't remember exactly.

@kiddosc: Yeah, that's why I was pretty sure I WAS screwing into a stud the second time because it definitely felt different and was harder to screw into. But maybe my screws just weren't long enough... they were 2.5 inches, but the gate has a couple things on the outside, so probably only about an inch was into the wall - probably not enough I'm guessing!

@Reese: @kiddosc: @Smurfette: Okay, maybe I'll have to try these crown bolts and see if that helps! Anyone know if these will work if I do screw into a stud?

@Adira: They won't work if you screw into a stud. They're meant to butterfly open behind the drywall. It sounds like your screws are just too short. An inch into the wall would barely get your through the drywall.

@kiddosc: That's probably my problem then. I'm going to make a couple changes and see if that works: I'm going to change the configuration of the gate so that it swings open from the banister side instead of the wall side (that way it's only putting pressure on the wall side when closed) and I'm going to get longer screws (and a stud finder to confirm I'm actually drilling into the right spot).
