@dojo: we have one gate at the top of the stairs. You would need a hardware mounted gate. We have this one. It is steel and we like it

We have the munchkin protect. We only had a gate at the top of the stairs, since we were worried about him falling from the top, but he couldn't climb up on his own.

I was in the bathroom, and heard a clunk clunk clunk scream. Turns out he went from not being able to climb any steps, to being able to get halfway up the staircase!

Definitely buy a bottom gate!

we havent installed the two top ones we have.

we also have an odd shaped front hall staircase with a landing, so we probably will leave that as is and block off rooms instead.

Our main living space is downstairs and only the kids rooms are upstairs, so for now, we just have a mounted gate at the bottom of the stairs. We installed it on the first step and didn't have to worry about any molding. We have the first years everywhere gate I think....the one with the clear panels. I like it and it's easily wipeable

The kids are highly attended when upstairs, 1:1 ratio, so we don't have a top gate installed yet. When they are old enough to get out of their cribs/beds or open doors, we'll put one at the top. We have it in the garage on standby. The kids are super good about going down stairs feet first, crawling style though...if they were more head first wild child, and upstairs more, we'd definitely have put it up sooner.
