  1. mrsjyw

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts

dylan, ryan, connor, issac, colin, lucas, owen are all names that DH vetoed, or we eliminated together

still have a list going for girls names!

  2. googly-eyes

Zoey- I wanted this one but DH vetoed it. It's also pretty popular but I don't think that would have deterred me. A cousin also just used this name though, so it's definitely out.

Emmett- I heard it's a Twilight name? I don't know, I haven't seen the movies or read the books except part of the first film on tv.

  3. LuLu Mom

    Girls:
Stella- we have a niece Ella
Elodie or Ellison- call her Ellie but DH vetoed since my best friend is named Ellie
Kinley: too close to Dog's name Finley
Emery: too close to daughter's name
Willa- doesn't flow with last name
Sutton: have boy cousin with name
Sawyer: have boy cousin with name

    Boys:
Dexter- DH vetoed due to tv show
    Austin: cousin had baby named
    Liam - too popular

    Virginia, Jolene, Stella for girls

Oliver and Larkin for a boy

My mom HATES Stella, I like Virginia and so does my husband but we don't love it enough. My husband's name is Joe, so Jolene seemed like we were trying to name her after him, which would be weird. I like Oliver and my husband doesn't. Larkin is a family name on my husband's side and if our first daughter was a boy, it would have been her name. For some reason that makes me not want to use it for another kid.

  5. Mrs. Pen

    blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts

@googly-eyes: It is. Which is why DH vetoed it. But the guy isn't even a main character. Anyway, I love the name regardless.

@jessiejo17: I love ALL your girl names!

  6. Mrs. Pen

@Rock n Roll: Jolene makes me think of the Dolly Parton song!

  7. Rock n Roll

    kiwi / 678 posts

@Coco Bee: That's why I like it! It was actually on my husband's list, but I liked it because I love Dolly!

I really love the name Lois for a girl - but DH can't say it without putting on a Stewie from Family Guy voice so I guess that one's out!

  9. MK0180

    Boys:
If we have a boy his name will be William. If we have a 2nd boy I like the name Rhys. I really like Bode but I don't think we'd use it. I also like Dexter, Hegen and Raiden (most popular from Mortal Kombat) but won't use them.

    Girls:
    Olivia - too popular
Emma - ditto (but was the name of my great grandmother)
Sienna (I know a girl named this)
Lara - from Doctor Zhivago but people may associate it more with Tomb Raider

In high school I read The Grapes of Wrath and for some reason, I really liked Rose of Sharon as a name. I've always been drawn to unique names (as my name is not exactly popular in the US) and this was the most unique name for me at that time.

Currently I like Kaia (or Caia), Belle, Emi or Zoe (DH likes this one).

@Coco Bee: Ha ha I don't know. She's the only Justice I've ever met.

  11. googly-eyes

    GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts

@coco bee Yeah it was DH who didn't want a Twilight name, not me, for the most part! But we ended up having a girl anyway. I still like it too!

@Rock n Roll: Virginia and Stella were both on my list too! I forgot those two!

  13. Mrs. Stroller

For girls: Olive - it was my grandmother's name but DH said no way and Magnolia
    For boys: Just Oliver

@knittylady: I had a friend named Brigid growing up (@Coco Bee: it's like Bridget with a "d" sound instead of the hard "t" sound) and kids at school called her Frigid Brigid. Although kids will tease any name!

@Coco Bee: we want to name a boy seamus!! i'm irish & DH is nigerian, so LO will be half irish how do you think people would pronounce it? my grandfather was james, but we used to call him seamus.

i love windsor for a girl, but won't use it because i don't want people to call her winnie, like pooh bear. i love matilda, but maddy is too close to my name. and emmerson, because our last name ends in 'son'

i can't think of any boy names that i want, but wouldn't use.

@Foodnerd81: Every time I hear Soledad O'Brien's name pronounced, it's with an American accent (soh-luh-dad), which bothers me. I think the Spanish pronunciation is way prettier! But I absolutely couldn't pull it off and I think the kid would get tired of correcting people.

  17. Shutterbug

    grapefruit / 4703 posts

@mrs. bird: I don't think you'd have any issues with a Seamus in MA although I've heard people say "Sean" as "Seen" so maybe you'd get people pronouncing it "See-muss" instead of "Shay-muss"?

    Girls:
Katelynn (our #1 choice if we were having a girl)
The "too popular" ones: Charlotte, Emma, Sophie, Sophia. Plus our last name is very Italian so they're kind of odd names to pair. Emma in particular, paired with our last name, sounds like the middle of the alphabet.
Alexa (Alexandra) or Alexis was a name we considered using for a very long time.
Frances, that was my mom's name and I love it (Franny for a little girl? Too adorable) but we had decided to use it as a girl middle name instead.
    Sylvia, Sylvie

    Boys:
I also liked all the "too popular" ones here: Jack, Sam, Max.
I always loved "Frank," that was my grandfather's name.
Anthony was the name we were going to use for the longest time.
Jacob (too "Twilight" now probably lol)

Can you tell I love old-fashioned names??

My cousins just had a baby today named graham! So cute but I wouldn't use it cause I don't want to copy

There are a lot of names that I like, but that would never work. This is because DH and I agree that any name we choose should sound good in English and Spanish.

For example, my name is Megan (which I love despite its popularity with people my age), but it sounds terrible in Spanish (may-GONE).

There are tons of classic, beautiful names that would never pass the Spanish/English test.

  21. SugarplumsMom

    bananas / 9227 posts

Linnea: it's SIL's middle name, plus I don't like how it's pronounced here and it's super popular
    Liam: too popular
Ethan: a friend's son's name and we live kind of closeby
Caitlin: the same friend's DD's name! (She has good taste ;D)
Avery: friend's son's name, it was on my short list of girl's names

The hardest for me was Linnea because that was the name I wanted to name our daughter before we even started TTC. It was the flower he showed me when we were just friends - it's when I realized I liked him.

@Rachel: hahaha, true! i think we have enough irish around where people would recognize it. i don't even think of it as being that irish, the guy next door to us is named seamus & he's black, so no irish there & hasn't seemed to be a problem for him =) so weird that people have said 'seen' for sean. i'm not a fan of alternative spellings, shawn seems weird to me, probably just because it's not what i'm used to.

    eggplant / 11287 posts

I love the name Sylvie, but DH hated it.
I am in LOVE with the name Honor, but I think that is another DH won't go for.
Also, Cora/Coralie/Coraline were on our short list but I think my cousin is using one of those.
I think Violet and Ruby are cute, but a bit too mainstream for me.
And for boy's names, I don't think there are any we can't use because both of us share the same taste in boy names and I don't think anyone in our family would ever use the ones we like.

  24. tororojo

    grapefruit / 4669 posts

@MediaNaranja: I'm big on names that sound good in either language since both Eng and Span are spoken so much around here! Also, after traveling all over in college, I have come to really appreciate having an easy-to-pronounce name that works well across different languages. I think it is just an easier thing to do for your kid in the long run!

  25. shinystraps

    apricot / 348 posts

Girls: Everie (after my grandpa, Everett), Sophia, Ava, Ella, Emma, Elsie - all nixed for being too popular

Boys: Ike (husband hates it ), Landon (sounds bad with our last name)

  26. lovehoneybee

    GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts

Grace, Amelia and Eleanor (Ellie) were on our short list. Sylvia, Stella, Nora, Sadie, Alice, Isla, Violet, Avery, Clare/Clara, Ava, Natalie, Piper, Sienna, Cecilia, and Olivia were all on my long list, but DH vetoed them. I like girl names a lot

Truman, Finn, Seamus, Liam, Jackson, Noah, Oliver, Henry, Harrison and Nathan were all vetoed.

  27. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

Several years back when I first wanted to TTC, my favorite names were Alton, Bennett, Calder, Elliott, and Quinn. Someone (not DH) told me they were all "too snobby and elitist", although I still secretly like them!

  28. Mrs. Jacks

    blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts

Girls: Beatrice (Mr. Jacks no likey), Amelie or Amelia, Josephine (used as a middle name), Zinnia, Zenobia (Mr. really wanted to use a Z, but these are both big names for a little girl to pull off), Zoe (too close to my dog's name), Violet, Marisol, Vivienne (we're not French), Willa, Antonia, Aurelia (too close to Lala's name).

Somebody use these names because they are all awesome!

Boys: Luca, Matteo, Zev, Kenzo, Teague, Elias.
You all can have these too, but know if we ever have a boy (unlikely) he will probably get one of these names

I love the name Juliette for a girl, but I'd never use it because I know everyone would tease her and ask where her Romeo is!

  30. Mrs. Pen

    blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts

@tororojo: that was my sister's dilemma. Her husband is Peruvian so they had to choose something that works well in English and Spanish. They chose Diego and we all LOVE it! It's so cute and suits him perfectly.

  31. Mrs. Pen

    blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts

@lawbee11: Oh I know!! I love Juliette but wouldn't even consider it for that reason.

@Mrs. Jacks: LOVE all your girl names!!! We have similar taste

@spaniellove: LOVE Quinn. I think because of Glee it will get popular.

  32. spaniellove

    honeydew / 7916 posts

@lawbee11: @Coco Bee: I knew a Juliet in college and I think if anyone dared to ask her that she would have punched them!

  33. lawbee11

    GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts

@Coco Bee: Julie is on our girls list, though (I don't like it as much as Juliette, but I love the nn Jules).

    @spaniellove: Ha!

  34. tororojo

    grapefruit / 4669 posts

Ooh, I love Juliet! I have noticed it is increasingly popular on naming sites--not top 100 or anything, but rising. I have this ridiculous fear of my baby name becoming the next top 10 pick, and I'm paranoid.

  35. twodoghouse

    honeydew / 7230 posts

Alice: This is one of my very favorite names, but my husband's name is Alex and he thinks it'd be weird to have a baby named Alice because the names sound so much alike!

Violet: Our last name sounds like "haze" so if we named a baby Violet, it's only one stepped removed from being a Jimi Hendrix song. Husband vetoed this as well.

  36. Mrs. Pen

    blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts

@lawbee11: I love that nn too!! but not a fan of Julie... I do like Julia though

@tororojo: Luisa? I don't think it will I think even Louisa hasn't ever been really common, just well-known.

  37. tororojo

    grapefruit / 4669 posts

@Coco Bee: Haha, no, not Luisa--I figure we're safe with that one! But potential popularity is a reason that I vetoed a whole lot of other girl names!

  38. Ree723

    grapefruit / 4819 posts

@Coco Bee: I haven't heard the name Teagan for a boy (sorry, going back to your original post even though there's been a ton of responses) but it is a very popular girls name here in Australia!

For girls, we loved Amelie, but only the French pronunciation, and knew it would be butchered in English so we decided not to use it. We went with Emily instead, which isn't too far off. I've also always loved Adele but with the singer now, we passed on it.

    Boys:
Oliver - DH's cousin used it 3 weeks before our team green baby arrived so we took it off the list
Hamish - pronounced HAY-mish but again would be butchered in the States
    Lachlan - too Aussie
Angus - love it but makes me think of yummy steaks
Henry - loved it until I had a Henry as a student, never will I use that name now!
Noah - DH said uhh no [ah]!

Can't remember what else was on our short list!

  39. Mrs. Jacks

    blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts

@Coco Bee: thanks! I have a little reputation for naming among family and friends (and @jholler !) so I feel a lot of pressure when it came to naming my girls or when I suggest names to others

  40. Rainbow Sprinkles

    eggplant / 11287 posts

@Mrs. Jacks: I love SO many of your names! My LO's name is on your list!. If my little brother was a girl he was going to be Cecily Beatrice. I might have to steal that one from my mom...
