Is your LO a real mover? DD stays pretty much put and won't bother trying to climb the stairs if the gate is even leaning on them, but my BFF's little man is into and on everything. That would change my potential suggestions! lol!

We have antique stairs as well (our house was built in 1747 and the banisters are original) and there IS a stair gate that requires no drilling for square posts like yours. Let me see if I can find it. We had to rig one on ours because we didnt want to drill either

Okay, what about something like this delux wooden swing gate. you could mount the hinge side to the wall above the second step, and then try to fasten the latches to one of the spindles somehow? In my mind using wireties (though I don't know how feasible it would actually be). If he's a seasoned climber I wouln't worry too much about 1 step, but you'll need something sturdy enough since he's into everything.

Usualy I pitch these ideas to DH and he brings them to life! lol!

There are some gates that use zip tie-like things around bannisters, and some use tension (though that might be difficult with your stairs). I think I've also seen a bigger gate in like a half circle that might work for you. I'll see if I can dig that one up.

@NaturallyCathy: @prettylizy: lol glad to help! Yeah, we tried this one, but our posts are round and we really wanted to exhaust our options before drilling. For Livs safety, totally would have done it, but we ended up using a regular gate and zip-ties.

Be careful with any that require too much pressure mounting on the post, as too much will displace it. We ran into that and had to use a different bottom of the stairs one.
