I read that book too and was disappointed. There's no way my lo will just calm down if I shushes her. If she's crying in her crib at nap time, nothing but me taking her out will calm her down. Sorry, but I have no advice for you. I'm curious to see other responses though!

I read it, too, and I scoffed through the entire thing. I kept muttering, "There is NO way this is going to work..." and of course, it did not. I, too, have no advice here...Would love to see some, though!

I didn't read this book, I only read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" and we used gradual extinction (let them cry for 5 mins, then the next time let them cry for 10, then 15, and every time after that 15) and it worked great for RJ. He was sleep trained within a week or two.

For me (and for RJ), it was important that he learn how to soothe himself back to sleep, especially since he's such an active sleeper (rolling around and such) and this modified version of CIO worked great for us. I absolutely hated to hear him cry, but having the time limits and being able to count down the minutes really helped me. I only needed to go up the 4th time (so the second 15 min cry) ONCE during the whole process. All other times he'd only need me once or twice, or three times at the most.

Our little man is fussy too. We have to make sure he goes down earlier than super fussy or it is a battle. We also make sure that he doesn't have any foods that hurt his tummy (dairy/soy). That has helped a ton.

Really late to the party here, but we used the Baby Whisperer method successfully to break bad habits... but not to get him to sleep through the night. We used it to get Baby X to sleep in the crib for bedtime and naps (when we stopped co-sleeping and naps in arms) and to wean off the pacifier. (DH gave back the pacifier on a tough day since then, so we're going to have to break the pacifier habit again, but at least I know a method that works with our baby.) The problem is that PU/PD does involve crying-- you ignore the mantra cries but respond to everything else. We have multiple caregivers, and they don't all know the cries like I do, so using it for extending naps or to sleep through the night (I can't be on PU/PD duty all night), etc. just won't work.
