How much would you pay a sitter to watch one 3 year old for 3 hours? We're in the Midwest, not a mid size town. Not a big city.

We pay our neighbor who is a freshman in high school $10/hr. I think $10-$12 is common for 1 child where we live for babysitting.

@autumnleaves: Same! We pay our high school babysitter 10 dollars an hour.

I’m probably going to look like a cheapskate, but we live in a low cost of living area and I actually think I pay on the high end for around here. But I pay them what they would make at a usual teenage part time job at Target or the like which is $7-8/hr.

Just wanted to add it probably depends on your minimum wage too: I’m on NY (not city) so it’s $11.80. I feel like that’s the minimum I could pay.

We have the most AMAZING sitter who is a full time teacher at our boys' daycare (so her availability is not great). My kids love her and she is the only one who can handle them both and put them to bed on her own.
We only get her maybe once every 2 months bc it's pricey, but I pay her as much as possible to keep her happy and willing to come back! $15 hour plus round up plus a generous tip. And $15 is only because usually more than half the time, the kids are asleep and she is just hanging out.
I would pay less for 1 child, a high school/college student for just a couple of hours.

Probably $10-12. I pay $12-15 now for two kids, so I would expect to pay a little less for one child.

Damn! I'm in Seattle and the babysitters I know (adults, mind you) charge $20. I feel like a cheapskate paying our old nannies $15 an hour. They are the only ones I know that are cool with that price. Granted, I dont know any teens.

Minimum wage is now $12 where I live, so I'd go a little lower for a teen under 16 maybe, butttt my 2 kids are a handful so I'd probably do $12-15 and have a teen ages 16-18.
However, we don't pay for in-home babysitting. We use a drop-off daycare chain called KidsPark, and in my area its $9 per hour for 1 kid and $13 per hour for 2 kids, and the daily max rate is $63 and $93.

I would expect to pay around $15/hour. I made $10/hour as a teen babysitter, but that was in the early 2000s.

I love seeing these rates... I've noticed it's creeping up in our area. And I would say it depends on the age of the sitter. The younger high school kids that watch our kids get $15/hr. Our nanny and other 'experienced' sitters get $20/hr.
