We are switching up our daycare situation and need to find childcare for about 10 scattered days throughout this summer. We are thinking of using care.com backup care to send our 14 month old son to a center near my office for those days. He’s used to daycare (he’s been going full time since he was 4 months), but I’m worried about sending him to a new place outside his normal routine. Can anyone tell me about their experience using a backup center? Thanks!

I haven't used backup center care, but I have used care@work backup in home care 5 or 6 times when our center was closed or when my work schedule required me to work outside the hours that our center is open.
In general I've been pleased with the care@work in home care. Some caregivers are better than others, but in general it has ranged from acceptable to fantastic. My son does have separation anxiety and in an ideal world I wouldn't have to leave him with a babysitter he hasn't met before (I'm sure same principle as leaving in a new daycare), but I need to stay employed and maybe it's good for him on occasion to go a little bit outside his comfort zone....

We had a back-up daycare when DS was younger, but I hated taking him there. He hated it and cried at drop off every time - and then always got sick because he was exposed to a new set of germs.
Now we try to rely on grandparents, or take a day off if we have to. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Could you find a mom through a local moms group who does occasional babysitting? They’d probably bring their own child, but then at least they could just come to your home and not mess with figuring out a whole new routine.

We use backup care through Bright Horizons when daycare is closed. We call it "camp" and the kids handle it pretty well - my youngest (2) cries a bit but the teachers are used to soothing new kids each day. I've been happy with the directors and teachers.
