I would do light gray paint on the walls and white cabinets. Are you planning on doing the floors too?

I love this cabinet.

What color are the counters? If they are off white or beige I wouldn't paint them white. Mine have a yellow tone to them and I painted the cabinets a dark brown and it made them look more white.

Do you have any budget to remove the carpet? Carpet in the bathroom just seems gross.

I would paint the cabinets & add new hardware and paint the walls. Remove that giant mirror and maybe replace with two smaller mirrors above the sinks. Update the light fixture too.

@swurlygurl: what about some nice bath mats or a rug if he likes standing on the carpet?

@swurlygurl: They make area rugs and bath mats for this reason - so you can wash them but not have to stand on cold/hard floors

I love all the suggestions above (like swapping/updating cabinet hardware, faucets/lights and replacing the single large mirror with two smaller ones - or framing it out if you love that it's big).
I love a light, airy bathroom. So my first thoughts are pale aqua blues, whites, grays, and dark wood tones if you or your husband are partial to them.
Someday I will be able to put my love of this color scheme to work in my own bathroom - the one that is currently pink and seafoam green

@swurlygurl: what about doing heated floors? My parents have them in their bathroom and they are sooooo nice.

I agree with the grey, and I would also change the hardware on the cabinets, maybe something modern and brushed silver?

Another thing you could do is spray paint the brass to something like oil rubbed bronze...if you can find a paint that's water resistatnt.

I agree with framing the mirror, simple molding will work wonders there.

@loveisstrange: oh yes, staining it would be so nice! Staining with some new modern brushed silver hardware. Nice nice.

My parents have the big mirror in their bathroom, and they framed it out with a piece of moulding that matches the new cabinets they had put in...they did a gut reno but couldn't take the mirror down because it was glued on with industrial glue and they didn't have it in the budget to replace the wall!
