I am deciding between 2 different crib bedding sets. One is pink and girly, and the other is gender neutral but still pretty. I love the pattern for the gender neutral, but I'm wondering if it is wishful thinking that we could use the same bedding for baby #2 eventually. Does it hold up well, or do you feel like you have to toss the sheets after baby #1 has already slept in them for a couple years?

I have nO idea about baby bedding, but I know I have sheets that are at least 6 years old and they're still in great shape.

I'd go with the girly set, and get neutral sheets. I'm getting neutral sheets and breathable bumper, and then gender specific all-other bedding.

Well we haven't even used the comforter. Actually I didn't buy one since you cant put it in the crib. My friend made lo a quilt though, and it's sitting on her glider. She's almost 11 months and her sheets are fine. We have 3 sets (which is one too many) so they get rotated often and get less use out of each one.

@artbee: oh that is a good point. most bedding sets include a quilt and a bumper, both of which aren't allowed in cribs anymore...and we were thinking about getting a crib with drawers underneath, so no crib skirt necessary either! So it comes down to just the fitted sheet, i guess?

@JessLC: yes that's what we did, it saves a ton of money! And you can still find some cute sheets.

@JessLC: well, why even buy a bedset then? I didn't either, such a waste of money knowing I'd toss the bumper and not use a comforter. He can get the blanket when he's a toddler.
So I made my own bed skirt and will make my own crib sheet, but sounds like you may just need a few sheets! -

Did you find it necessary to use waterproof mattress pads under the sheets? Any recommendations there?

@JessLC: for us, yes. Our son spits up sooo much!! lol and of course there is the occasional diaper leak/blow out, especially if you use disposables (my son has never Had a Blowout in his cloth diapers).
Or else use a piece of wool if you don't want to use the plastic pads. We had a piece of felted wool we bought from turnanewleaf designs on etsy

@JessLC: I think we just got them at babies r us. I bought some pretty pink flowery ones but if I could do it again I'd get gender neutral. I know sheets aren't too expensive, but all those pink things that I have to replace if I have a boy next add up!

I have 2 carters waterproof mattress pads and 6 or so sheets. I change them pretty often, because DS's head sweats. I don't plan to save the sheets and reuse them, they're pretty worn out already from all the washing and drying. My son is in disposables at night, and at 18 months, we've never had a blowout, not even when he had a stomach bug...I think that's more due to incorrect sizing.

The beddings sets are a bit of a waste. Luckily teh one we got, yes it has a comforter that I plan on putting on the back of our chair, but it was nice since ours came with 2 sets of sheets and a skirt, which can all be used! I didn't buy the bumper since it couldn't be used anyways!

I agree-- don't buy a bedding set til you're looking to put them in a toddler bed! All we have used for Wagon Jr. so far (he's 2.5 years old) is mattress pads (I have 2) (buy good waterproof ones that won't melt in the dryer), fitted sheets (I have 3), and a breathable bumper! He's staying in the crib when the new baby comes (we have two cribs) so I'll be getting more mattress pads and fitted sheets for the next baby too.

I bet they will last, but you will probably want to buy a new set for number two just for fun. I will.

@JessLC: Just FYI I thought I wouldn't need a crib skirt either because we were doing the crib with the drawer at the bottom. After we put it together I realized you totally DO need the crib skirt. When you have the crib mattress on the highest setting (which you want for a newborn) you can see right into the drawer. So now I need to get a crib skirt so you can't see into the storage drawer.

@MamaMoose: so funny, because i was looking at your pic last night and i thought that it might need a skirt anyway. but maybe not when you moved the mattress down to a lower notch? i ended up buying a crib without a storage drawer anyway though, so i bought a whole bedding set...despite everyone saying that it was a waste of money! =/
ooh also, what kind of mattress did you get? i am in the market for one

@JessLC: ours is by Colgate. I believe they had three different models and we went for the middle one as far as expense. We bought it at the same place as our furniture and the sales lady very highly recommended any of the Colgate mattresses so we went with it.
