Bees can live IN the ground now?! Goodness... We have a crazy problem that we're working on getting rid of - carpenter bees. They are HUGE and so bothersome. They've built their colonies in any rotting wood we have in our yard, which is a lot. We have an OLD deck and gazebo that we're working on fixing up, so we're slowly removing the problem. We back up to an awesome wooded area - why can't they just live there and not be attached to our house?!

How scary! Yes definitely find a professional bee person.. I have no idea what they would even be called but I hope you can get this resolved quickly!

I read that bees are actually quite docile and its usually wasps that sting.

So weird that they are in the ground. We had good luck with the spray. They kill on contact and you can spray from really far away. We had a colony in our eaves and between the exterior & interior wall gap. Ugh... when we sprayed, they started coming INSIDE but they were all half dead so by the time they made it in, they were all gathered in a big dead pile near a small hole in the wall. It was so gross!!!!

@locavore_mama: yes! Bees can live in the ground. I think those are hornets? Yellow jackets? They're mean, awful bees.

We've got a bee infestation. I don't know what makes our home and yard so desire able. We have terminex and they do come out and spray, but damn, they can't keep up with it.

We've got mud wasps, angry bees that Mrs Twine helped us identify, and more recently white faced hornets that attacked me when I was pulling weeds out front.

Wait until dark and spray them with bee/hornet/wasp spray. Make sure it's night time! You might have to spray a few nights in a row, but they'll be gone.

Yick! I'd call a professional for sure!

I had a problem with yellow jackets getting between my cement steps and house (through a very tiny crack). We called an exterminator who came out assessed the situation but didn't spray until the evening (less risk of getting stung). Definitely sounds like you need to have someone professional examine the yard because the holes/hives could be connected. Could your usual exterminator recommend someone else for this work?

Oh noooooo!!! Our neighbors had a similar problem. They had a beekeeper & terminator come out 3x! She told us that they told her to let us know we couldn't leave the dogs out for long and to be very careful if we let our daughter play outside for 3 days. The last visit seemed to have taken care of it, she said it was really bad and they could hear the buzzing from just about anywhere inside their house. Good luck!!! I hate all bugs, especially the kinds that sting so I run the hell away as fast as I can, lol.
