Any recs? It's coming time to switch him out of the infant seat :'(
Also, how long are carseats good for? Too lazy right now to go searching - indulge me?

I really like the Safety 1st carseat we got from Costco - it was around $60!

Evenflo Triumph is around $150 and gets the highest ratings from Consumer Reports. Ratings are on par with (or higher even) than the 2x as expensive Britax. I like the way the harness tightens though it takes using it once or twice to get used to it. The shoulder straps are super easy to adjust so you get the right fit every time. It's convertible. We kept my son backwards til 2 in it and now have it turned around.
I'm getting ready to buy two more for my 8 month old (1 for each car). We already have 2 for my 2.5 yr old.

@sera_87: For under $150 i think the Graco MyRide 65 convertible seat is a good deal. We got this for our second car

We have this one, its on sale right now to fit in your price range! I love the way the straps adjust, no rethreading, and all the extra safety features. Plus is was important to me to find a seat that would fit him until he is big enough for a booster. Not all convertible seats have high enough height limits to get you to booster stage and I didn't want to drop another few hundred dollars on a second set of seats. http://m.toysrus.com/skava/static/product.html?type=TRU_product_us&url=%2Fproduct%2Findex.jsp%3FproductId%3D13069715&domain=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.toysrus.com

@sera_87: Just like the infant seat, convertible seats have a height and weight limit, so it will depend on your child. The number at the end of the model is often the weight limit, i.e. we have a britax pavilion 70 which means it is rated to 70 lbs. Our second carseat is a britax roundabout 55 so it is not good for as long. I think the height limit is around 48 inches? Most seats should say--make sure to ask about height too though!

@TurtleDoves: oh for sure! I have a dodge caliber. You'd think it'd be ok but, uh, it's not.

@sera_87: especially if you have #2 anytime within 3 years. Then, it's 2 back there. Oh Lordy

@sera_87: right, so the years will totally depend on how fast your kiddo hits those milestones, so it is hard to predict. I don't know what a typical age is for those but you could check the cdc growth charts?
@TurtleDoves: our britaxes fit in the back of our little honda civic and toyota corolla. I was worried about this too!

We have a Safety 1st Alpa Omega Elite that we paid $100 for. It has good reviews, seems really sturdy and well-made and the materials are nice and soft. I like it. It's also usable up to 100lbs
