I haven't used my k'tan yet, but most people seem to think it works best for younger, smaller babies, so I'm not sure how comfortable it would be for an 8 month old. For a bigger baby people seem to like the more structured carriers, like an Ergo, but of course, those are more expensive.

Like I said, I haven't actually worn a baby yet, so I can't offer very good advice other than what I read on here and on the internet!

@MarieJ: What is your price range? At 8mo I think you might do better with something a little more structured or a ring sling. - esp. if your LO is not used to being worn.We've always worn our LO and my carrier preference has changed over the year. I was a die hard moby fan until about 5 months when he got too wiggly.

Since then I switch between a woven wrap and our Ergo. While the Ergo is not inexpensive I really do think it is a great investment. We use it for errands, shopping, parties and when he is being fussy and wants to be held or needs a break from being overstimulated.

While I don't have experience with them, a mei tai might be a good option for you too.

@MarieJ: oh, p.s. we also do have an ergo--we got the boba air because while we really like the ergo (very comfortable and secure), it's HOT here and needed something more lightweight for summer. i recommended the boba air if you wanted something less expensive and weren't planning on babywearing a ton. let us know what you decide!

Do you have any used baby gear stores, or baby consignments near you? There's one around here that always seems to have ergos.

You could also rent one. PaxBaby has a good rental program.

@MarieJ: Make sure you check on nobetterdeals.com-- I see k'tans on there a lot, as well as other carriers (very rarely Ergo of Beco though). I've seen k'tans as low as $20 and change!

@MarieJ: Oh good-- yeah they have very good deals on them, so if you only use it this one time, it's really not that big an investment!

@MarieJ: I don't think a K'tan would be comfy for a baby of that size or the wearer in any position. It's too stretchy to be supportive for lengthy carries. My LO is 14 months old and about 1 lb heavier than yours, and there's no way I would wear her for an entire shower in a stretchy wrap. My only other advice is to not wait until the shower to try it. There's a very good chance she will not be a fan if she's never been worn before.

I agree about the K'tan not being supportive enough. But Wrapsody baby wraps are pretty much the cheapest and they are SUPER awesome.
