Just what the title says. We need to get DD a winter jacket...it doesn't get all that cold here (usually in the 40s-50s, occasionally a little cooler) but it always feels damp and clammy even when it's not raining. I've been considering a Patagonia down sweater but I'm not sure whether it would be too warm, not warm enough, and/or okay in drizzle. And I'd love not to spend that much $$. If you live in the area (or a similar climate), what have you found to work well?

The problem with down is that it won't keep her warm if it gets wet. You could definitely get a down sweater and a raincoat and layer them. That's what my husband and I do for ourselves.
LO mostly wears a North Face raincoat and thermal or flannel shirts. We add a hat when it's cold. He also has an REI puffy coat (synthetic, but probably the same weight as the down sweater) that he wears when it's cool but dry. We might layer them later in the winter.
I also bought him the lightest North Face insulated jacket (it was called Brier) for this winter, but I'm not expecting to get too much use out of it unless we go up in the mountains.

I'm going to check out REI, it looks like they have a midweight, water-resistant down jacket from their house brand or a few others on sale that could work. Daycare doesn't take them outside if it's really pouring so it just needs to stand up to light drizzle. And we don't really go to the mountains I the winter, we like hiking but aren't into snow sports, so she really doesn't need anything too rugged.

I got DD an Obermeyer Kismet and we like it a lot! Patagonia down sweaters aren't really hardy for rain/ really wet snow.

I would just get a lined rain coat. LO has a couple that are pretty warm and certainly warm enough for days in the 40's.

REI sells great toddler/infant coats. They are like the Patagonia down option, but a lot less $$$.
We have a lined raincoat for rainy days, a fleece for 50's, and the "down" coat (I think it's alternative down) for 40's. You could probably get by with a fleece and a windbreaker (that's water resistant).
I've found all of her coats at consignment sales/shops here in Portland. Not sure where you are in the PNW, but our consignment shops are serious gold!

@littlejoy: where are some good kids' consignment stores on Portland? I'm going to be down there in a few weeks for work and I'm planning to do some shopping (no sales tax, yay!). I haven't had much luck with jackets at the consignment stores near me so if I have time and they're not too far away, I'd love to check some out when I'm there.

@yoursilverlining: what brands are the lined raincoats? I have one for myself and that's what I was hoping to get DD, but I haven't found any so I'm probably looking in the wrong places!
