(I'm talking about the portable potty, not the one that hitches onto your toilet seat).

You mean a potty to take with you to public places? The popular one among my group of mom friends is the Kalencom Potette Plus 2-in-1. It folds up compactly and can be used as a stand-alone potty a child would use on the floor OR on top of a toilet. If used as a stand-alone, you put plastic bags with an absorbent material in them to absorb the pee and catch the poo.. You can buy refills of the bags or make your own version with you own plastic bags and paper towels.
My daughter was potty trained on a toilet trainer though, so she didn't like this as a stand-alone of course, but more surprisingly, not as a potty ring either. It's so popular with my friends though. I've seen it used in parks and one of my friends swears by it for long car rides.
For those looking for a potty ring to go over a public restroom seat, my DD used the one by PRI. I was so happy the day this worked out for us because she went through a period where she was scared to go potty in public. But she got over it when I got her this! http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000BXHPEU I put a disposable liner on the toilet, then this ring on top. I wipe it down afterwards, then fold and place in it's own plastic bag.

um, sorry for the long response but now I think you just meant a potty to use at at home. We used the Bjorn trainer that goes on the toilet so I'm of no help to you, but a lot of people I know love the Bjorn potty chair that goes on the floor. oh and I can share that at first, we did get the Fisher Price Cheer for You potty (it sings when your LO pees!), but we did away with it quick because DD just saw it as a toy. So I wouldn't recommend it. Go with something simple like the Bjorn
