DS strains all day long! I've tried gas drops and prunes and they don't seem to be working.

DS totally struggled with this, I didn't give him prunes once, I gave it to him twice a day for as long as it took. Once he got a little older, I have found yogurt helps too.

He is killing me! He scratches up his face and tugs his ear and strains! I've been doing prunes since Friday so I'm praying it gets things moving!

Aww poor baby! We had constipation issues too and pear juice in his purées and prunes both helped get things moving.

Fruits that start with P, cut out bananas if those are being given.

we ended up having to give lo miralax, but only because the pediatrician recommended it. his poops were so hard he had a small tear in his bottom.

I've heard a little coconut oil mixed in with their bottle can also help get things moving!

I would try giving him a little diluted apple juice. There were a few times where DS was really constipated and giving him prunes or pear wouldn't work.

@tequiero21: haven't tried blueberries but i will do anything! i just spent the last hour consoling him/nursing off and on because he is so uncomfortable!

So sad I've also read that if the stool doesn't look like dark small pellets, it's not necessarily constipation, but it's just hard for them to learn how to push out solid stool. We have been staying away from carrots, rice, bananas, apples. Lots of pears, prunes, peas, and sweet potatoes.

@mrs. wagon: he is having the hardest time getting it out! i haven't tried any carrots/rice/bananas/apples yet, but i'm afraid i was too overzealous with what i have given hiM!

I know this may sound weird but in the beginning, i nursed after giving solids as opposed to doing it beforehand and it helped. Also, water helps. When i got really desperate i gave pear juice, but i found that prunes worked the best.
What have you given so far?
I agree with above, no bananas or apples. Stick with the Ps!

Maybe try a probiotic? Otherwise you could try some diluted prune juice or kiwifruit

Interesting that everyone is saying no apples. They usually help get things moving! We have had luck with prunes, peaches, pears, and squash. And, sometimes she strains but is not constipated, just firm. She really had to adjust from bm only! Good luck!

@bpcmarj: At first I thought the same thing when I heard that of apples and babies, but I think it's the fiber in the apple peels that helps with digestion.

@betsyboop: They seem to work for P, so weird! Maybe she's atypical.

We had to feed him prunes and pears for a few days before he got better. I also switched from rice cereal to oatmeal cereal and avoided bananas and sweet potatoes which our pediatrician said causes constipation.
