I want to get LO a teddy bear as his "big" Christmas gift (we're flying and we got him a toy kitchen for his birthday, so I'm not planning on doing much for Christmas). But I want it to be a nice one. One that I can look at for years and think of it as his first Christmas teddy. (Though I realize he might not feel the same way, haha!)
What's your favorite teddy bear? Gund? Winnie the Pooh? It's got to be high quality, huggable, classic.

I loved Gund when I was a kid. I had two bad Gund experiences recently (stuffing coming out, falling apart brand new) so I'm leaning towards liking JellyCats now.

My family always does Merrythought bears for babies' first bear - I guess my great-grandfather used to work for them. Very classic, but I found mine too "prickly" as a kid so it didn't get much love and is still pristine! My brother's was nice and soft so was loved but still has held up very well. They're pretty pricey, but definitely "heirloom" items. (Similar to Steiff.)

I love Gund as well! Or maybe you could get a Build-a-Bear and personalize it to him a little? Although that might be a better idea to do with him when he's a little older!

My LO was given the Jellycat Bashful Honey bear as a gift and at first, I thought it looked pretty simple and figured it would get tossed to the side, but she absolutely LOVES it. It's super soft and cuddly and she brings it with her practically everywhere.

Absolutely Gund! All my favorite stuffed animals from my childhood were Gund. The biggest tragedy occured when I lost my light tan little Snuffles. I was never able to find the same one again.
LO now has a large Snuffles and she adores it and uses it like a pillow to snuggle with.
ETA: from your choices I like the Maxie the best!

Steiff is a really classic German brand. Some of them get into ridiculous territory but there are some reasonably priced ones too.
MIL likes to tell us that Angela Merkel got the Sarcozy baby a Steiff bear when he was born.

@jedeve: The one DD has is soft. It's also really well made and IIRC it's made in Germany. The tag also said it was free of any harmful chemicals too.

I also like Gund. But I think the cutest bear is Bartholomew by Jellycat. I plan on getting DD one next time we visit my mom.

@jedeve: Vermont teddy bears. I think they even do factory tours. I think they're probably the most well known.
And I found Stuffington when searching. Unfortunately, neither seem to have the snuggliest bears.

@BananaPancakes: The Vermont teddy bear factory is awesome! I went on a couple tours growing up. I'm not sure how cuddly they are, but they are really cute. They might have some more cuddly type ones now.
