I'm thinking about getting a big ticket item for my toddler this Christmas that will be good for months of indoor play this winter. Suggestions? He'll be 18 months.

We got DD a play kitchen for Christmas when she was 21 months. It's been a hit ever since (almost 2 years later!)

@lamariniere: Agreed!
Also, if he's into construction vehicles, any bruder vehicles are great.

@hilsy85: bruder toys are so nice! they have some simpler, harder-to-destroy toddler versions.
play kitchen, doll stroller, some other push toy...

Instead of a big ticket item, I'd probably do a few smaller things, we got him a kitchen when he turned two and he is so uninterested in it.
What he does love, though, is the appliances for the kitchen, like a toaster where the toast pops up, his microwave, cutting food, etc. He's also really into his wooden train set, but this he's only really been interested in since he turned three.

@looch: yeah we have a train set and table and he enjoys it sometimes but it does seem like hell "get" it more as time goes on.
Any thoughts on an easel or indoor slide type thing? Crawling tubes or tents etc?

@Bao: Our toaster is from Hape and our microwave is the Toys R Us house brand, Just Like Home. Pottery Barn kids actually seems to use the Hape brand for their own appliances at TWICE the price, too! My son likes the appliances that do something, I think my husband has the coffee machine on his list as well.
@knittylady: I think an easel is a great idea. I'll be honest, we also have a pop up tunnel and I think I spent more time in it than my son, lol. What about a pop up tent, or something along those lines...we had a play house thing and that was a huge hit as well.
I don't know if you're okay with this, but we had a bobby car that we used indoors up until my son was 2.

@looch: I was eyeing the Hape toaster for the future, thanks!

A slide is a great idea! My LO got one for her 1st birthday and still loves it. So do all the other kids that come over. One was like Daddy, they have a slide IN their house!
We are getting LO a kitchen. She plays with the one at school, so hopefully she will at home too. My sister is getting her a easel but I have a feeling it won't be used much till she is 2.

@knittylady: Does he have a tent? My daughter has a tent and tunnel from Ikea and LOVES that thing. I think we paid $25 for the set but if I had wanted to go more "big ticket" I would have gotten her a play tent from Etsy.
ETA: We have these and they're a huge hit-

@looch: my almost three year old still cruises around the house daily in his bobby car! We definitely got our money's worth on that toy. I actually worry that he won't give it up when his little brother is ready for it in 6 months or so!
