I can see how it's cute. I picture a super feminine girl running around flower dresses named James and that makes it work somehow.
But what if she is a tomboy and doesn't have that juxtaposition of feminine/masculine? I knew a Ryan and a Michael (girls) in college. It worked for one, but not so much for the other.
Maybe I'm over thinking it. But I'm glad my name isn't Adams or something.

@littlejoy: I think naming a daughter James is totally hipster!! At least it's not Macaroon or Magenta

@jedeve: I was totally thinking about that after I posted! Like it might be cute as a little cute kid, but what about during the awkward teenage years? Or what if she's not that cute when she grows up (highly unlikely with her parents genes but still!)

@jedeve: Blake works for Blake Lively because she's gorgeous and feminine. If she were a tomboy or not attractive it totally wouldn't work as well.

@blackbird: Ha!! Macaroon James! I can feel my husband's eyes rolling from here.

Somehow, I don't see them as hipster at all? Like, Maggie Gyllenhaal (sp?)... I think she's hipster. Blake and Ryan seem like gorgeous bohemians, if anything.

Poor boys will never have any names left. James is all boy to me so I don't like it on a girl but then again Maxwell was all boy before Jessica Simpson

I don't hate it but I wouldn't choose it for my own kid. I'm kind of surprised, for some reason I pictured them as going more classic. I never thought of them as very hipster, especially Ryan Reynolds. He's always seemed kind of wholesome, cute football player/athlete to me. Not that I actually know anything about him...lol
ETA: @HabesBabe: Oh yeah, she's total hipster. And her daughter's name --- Ramona -- sounds very hipster to me

@Mrs. Chocolate: Right?! I'm glad I'm not having to name a son because it's slim pickings!
@oliviaoblivia: Is giving boys girl names part of this trend as well??

I think I'd like it only if it was an honor name of some sort. Like if her mom's maiden name was James, that could be sort of cool. But it feels like trying too hard to just pick it randomly.

Well, as someone with a daughter named Elliott, I really like gender neutral names so I think James is a great choice. Blake is a very strong, gender neutral name so I'm not surprised.

@HabesBabe: Yeah, they're definitely not hipsters. Gorgeous bohemians really nails them down!!

I like it!! I think it's a sweet name for a girl. I also like Randi for a girl (and my dad's name is Randy) so...
I feel like any more teachers and doctors (etc) aren't going to be able to assume anything when it comes to names - so much crazy

I don't really think James is gender neutral. I'm on board with James as a middle name for a girl, but not so much for a first.
I love the name in general though, it's actually my BFF's name. Maybe if it were to one day be more neutral I'd like it better for a girl. My name is a name that everyone today would say is a girl's name, but way back when it was actually a man's name. My great grandfather didn't like it when my parents chose it because it was still a man's name to him.

Love the name....for a boy. It was a name we were tossing around for our son. Not crazy about it for a girl, but I agree with pp, better than north or kal-el, or blue ivy or something.

I do like gender neutral names but James might have a long way to go before it's perceived as such by the majority...my cousin used it as a middle name for her daughter and I think it sounds great there, like using a family surname.

Meh. Violet would have been way better, in my opinion. I don't think of James as being gender neutral.

I think it's kinda cute even if I would never do it. I see it being that Blake can kinda go either way!

Nope. Don't like it at all. But I'm really not into the gender neutral thing. It sounds all boy to me.

I was actually thinking about naming our daughter, James! Took it off our list bc it's also my uncle's name.

@lawbee11: @blackbird: How now! Haven't you ladies seen Firefly or Serenity? Adam Baldwin's character is named Jayne!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Adira: I haven't, but aren't those shows set hundreds of years into the future? Maybe it'll actually be a boy's name by then But for now, Jane = girl!

@lawbee11: haha, yes, it's a sci-fi!
@blackbird: So disappointed in you! You're an engineer - you're supposed to like this kind of stuff with me.

So it's funny that I don't like James as a first name for a girl......because I'm considering it as a middle name for my second girl LO. But it was my dad's name, and he passed away when I was in college....plus James sounds like a last name as well, so I figure it's no different than people who use mother's maiden name as a middle name for LOs.

Hey, at least it's an actual name and not a, I don't know, fruit...
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Adira: nope!!!! Pretty a traditional in that department ha!
pomelo / 5132 posts
@Adira: totally forgot about Jayne!
I prefer James as a middle name for a girl. I had a neighbor growing up named Michael Mary and they always called her by the full name or Mi (like My)
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. J: Yay! Someone who knows what I'm talking about!!
That said, I'm not really a fan of James as a first name for a girl.
