I was at a friend's house recently and was surprised to see that her 6 month old baby used a blanket in the crib. I've been really neurotic about not putting anything in the crib and I only use sleepsacks (with fleece PJs if it gets cold). Just wondering what you ladies do?

we just have our LO in a warm set of PJs, although our ped. said that he can start sleeping with a lovie at 4 months (which is somehow an A+A swaddle blanket) if we want him to. I'm a bit freaked by havinga blanket in the crib though...

I've put a blanket over her for naps on occasion, but we don't use a blanket at night. We use pjs + sleepsack.

Just footie onsie and sleep sack. That's all. I'm afraid to put a blanket in there. I do use it when he's napping on the swing though but a breathable kind though.

I asked the dr at his 6 month appt and she said an A&A blanket is totally fine because he is mobile, has great hand and neck control, can roll etc. so he's slept with that for the last 2 months. Now that its cooler he will sleep with his crocheted blanket and its been fine. He never pulls it up near his face and even if he did all the blankets we use are very breathable.
I think he would have a sleep sack because they are restricting and he loves to move all over

I let him use a fuzzy blanket for naps, because I check on him constantly, and he doesn't really move during nap time. At night I use a sleep sack, but during the day putting him in a sleep sack enrages him.

We use an a+a blanket in the crib with him. However we use it folded in half and I put it down in the crib first and then place the sleep sack on top. After he is in the sleep sack I tuck the two ends of the a+a blanket around him like a burrito.
Otherwise, I've also just swaddled him with his arms free and then put the while swaddled baby bundle in the sleep sack.
It is COLD here!
He is 4.5 mnths

fleese pjs and a sleepsack, we keep his room around 70 degrees so it's not really cold in there. Baby X is almost a year old, so we were considering letting him have blankets, but a friend of a friend recently lost her 19 month old to SIDS, so I'm feeling too paranoid to let him have a blanket even now.

I'm the bad mother whose baby has slept with a blanket from day one. He deapised the swaddle, so it kind of just progressed into blanket usage. At 6 months, he's yet to get one near his face. I'm still nervous about it sometimes, but unless his sleep movement changes suddenly, he'll have a blanket.

LO is 14 months and she still doesn't have anything in the crib. She sleeps in a sleep sack and we've tried a lovey, but she doesn't like it so it's just her in there.

She sleeps with an AA blanket at daycare but we use sleepsacks at night.

We stopped using the sleep sack in the summer and now LO refuses to use them. He moves around so much that it wouldn't make sense for me to give him a blanket. I have tried to put one on top in the middle of the night and it doesn't stay on for long. My LO is 17 months old.

We use a blanket in a crib. LO sleeps on her tummy and we drape it over her back.

LO is 14 months and is still in sleep sacks. I worry about using a blanket.

No blankets here. One of our nannies put one in the crib one time and when I checked on M. her head was completely wrapped. Never again! She rolls like an alligator bringing it's prey down!

@Mrs. Jacks: So scary! The nephew of someone I know had a light blanket (I'm assuming like an a&a one) and it was twisted around his neck from rolling around in his sleep like your lil M, only he wasn't lucky enough to have someone check on him in time
my guess is they figured since he was 6 months and could easily roll and the blanket wasn't thick enough to suffocate him he'd be okay, but he died from it. Heartbreaking!

@mrs. bird: I know. It can happen so quickly! I'm probably awful to work for thanks to all my freak out things. I try to act blasé about orbit inside I'm always worried about what could go wrong.

Linus doesn't sleep with a blanket, but it's actually really common here in the UK. There's not the "nothing in the crib" thing that there is in the States. Most of my friends have loads of stuffed animals in there and use blankets too. In the child education class we took before birth they said that when you are tucking your baby in with sheets or blankets to put them in the "Feet to Foot" position- which means that you put the baby's feet at the foot of the crib. Basically so they can't wriggle down under the covers, they'd only be able to wriggle up and away from them.

LO was swaddled for the first 2.5 months but we also used a blanket on top of that as it was quite chilly in our house at night. We always tucked the blanket under the bottom of the cot and had the sides securely tucked in so it couldn't go anywhere, so I never really worried. In the mornings, her blankets would be exactly how we left them so I knew she wasn't able to dislodge them during her sleep.
Now that she's close to 4 months and no longer swaddled, we just use a sleep sack and no blanket. She moves around her cot a ton and she's strong enough that I don't think the blanket would stay tucked in to the bottom of the cot anymore.
Hearing some of the scary stories out there, I don't think LO is ever going to be given a blanket to sleep with!

Nope. I would never sleep if she had anything in there with her. She gets a sleep sack when it's cold. We have a long sleeve sleep sack for really cold days.
M doesn't really move during naps but I found her under a blanket napping at daycare one day. I flipped internally and the next day asked them not to use blankets on her.

we have a ton of stuff. =T i know. it's bad. we have blankets, lovies, pacifiers.... and i'm going to try and add a bumper for my girl since she keeps banging her head against the crib and getting her foot stuck between the slats. i do make sure they're breathing pretty often though haha.

@MungBean: & @Coco Bee: yeah, I'm sure it's very rare at 19 months, and I think the recommendation is that at 1 the risk is low enough that blankets are ok, but still, hearing about that 19 month old's death shook me up enough that I'm just not ready to risk it yet.

@mediagirl: I don't think I've seen long sleeved sleep sacks but that's a great idea. I keep L in a fleece sleep sack with footed pjs but I wonder if that's warm enough. What brand is your sleep sack?

Toddler Girl was swaddled to 9 months and then had a light fleece blanket I think, little quilt at a year. Wonder Baby is a crazy sleeper (not surprising as she's a crazy kid!) and I had to stop swaddling her at 5 months and switched to a sleep sack. She'll probably be in a sleep sack until spring at least, maybe until next fall.

DS sleeps in pjs and a sleepsack. We stopped swaddling at 4.5 months and he's been using a sleepsack ever since (13.5 months now). I think we'll keep him in a sleepsack for as long as we can.

What about walking babies & sleepsacks? DS is 10 months but stands on his own and walks along the crib, I could see him getting so angry and frustrated in a sleepsack.
He loves his blankie but these posts are making me nervous. I just bought two sleepsacks online. -
@rachiecakes: halo has sleep sacks with feet. DD still likes hers at 2.5 years old! She doesn't want to sleep with a blanket.

@bree72: I'm the worser mommy! I let my baby sleep on his tummy starting from when he was one month old, and I use a blanket on him for now, only because he can't roll yet, but I will have to re-evaluate when that happens.

We tuck DS into bed with a crocheted blanket every night. He doesn't like sleep sacks (I think because his legs are restricted?), but he also had a hard time weaning from the swaddle, so this was our solution. I think DD was over a year before we let her sleep with a blanket, but every child is different.
@red_seattle: @MungBean: Actually, when a child dies unexplainably after 12 months, it's called Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). It's incredibly rare, and there is no known cause for it, but it's still incredibly sad and tragic. My heart really goes out to your friend, red-seattle.

@red_seattle: Oh man! I know this is an OLD POST, but your friend's story is so frightening! I think K will be in a sleep sack as long as possible! And I'll be using our AngelCare monitor forever...
So scary... stories like that make me so paranoid...
