I have a blog and want to get into blogging consistently and perhaps even strive toward blogging as a "profession".
Does anyone else keep a blog with a high traffic volume? How do you generate volume, encourage comments?
I really love blogging but have been discouraged feeling it's a waste of time. But I do know it takes time.
Any tips or ideas would be great!

It's hard work!!
I see a lot of people try to become the next "Martha Stewart" and blog about their lives/lifestyle (which can cover a lot of ground). But unless you're a fashion blogger, that's a tough road. The most successful bloggers tend to write very focused blogs on specific topics.
I don't think Martha Stewart could become Martha Stewart these days! The world is a different place...

I agree with some of the above comments. I think Young House Love has done a few great posts about how they blog professionally and how they got to where they are now.

@Thehistoryofus: That's exactly who I was thinking of when I read this question.
I've read a few different blog FAQ type things, and the one thing they all say is... don't start blogging for the money. It takes so long to get to a point that you would actually generate any money that your hourly pay would be pennies. If you got into it because you really enjoy it, and a few years down the line, it happens to make a little bit of money, awesome, but you'll be disappointed if you go in thinking it will happen quickly.
All that from someone who can't even work Wordpress, though. I'm a reader of blogs, not a writer.

I think there is also a big difference as a full time blogger and someone who just wants to blog to make a bit of extra side cash.

The biggest suggestion I have for increasing traffic is to find a community with a blogroll for a specific topic. For example, I joined Mel's list of infertility blogs which is huge, participated in some of the monthly topics and it really increased my readership.

@Coco Bee: Problogger.com is a great place to start for some tips. The best way to start, is to just blog about a specific topic that you're passionate about and go from there.
Once you have a decent readership, you can start making money through advertising, link sales, affiliate sales, and even through E-book sales.
Google adsense and Amazon Affiliates are a good place to start. You're probably not going to get rich quick, but it's a good way of supplementing your income.

Its so hard now... everyone thinks they can make money blogging. Which isn't the case. It's hard work, and you have to be willing to invest yourself (time wise) , design wise (design is an important factor now because of pinterest)
I make about 25$ a month on my blog. It's not much but I haven't been very active lately. It pays for my hosting/domain which is good.

I need to start up a proper schedule again. I don't make money off it directly, but it's part of my self promotion for my freelance illustration.

If you're passionate about something, write about that. The main issue I see is that everyone and their grandmother has a blog these days, so it's hard to differentiate yourself. I really think you've got to focus on whatever the next big social media phenom is.
