I know this has been asked a couple different times & I did read those old threads along with reading a couple blog posts on comparing them as well, but I'm wondering if anyone new has anything to share on starting a personal blog (maybe one day having it's own domain) & which they prefer from their personal experience. Or if there is something completely different that I should consider....

I use wordpress. I had a blogspot for a while and didn't like it. No real reason, besides the way it looked. The wordpress app is really easy to use too.
If you were ever wanting to have ads on your blog, wordpress doesn't allow it but blogspot does.

Personally, I like Tumblr.
WordPress is great if you want to add a lot of custom features (like a social media feed, or a counter, or a gallery or something). It has so many open source and easy to install plug ins you can use, but if you just want to something simple, stick with Tumblr.

@pui: Hmmm... I have a tumblr.... never used it though. Seems like it's just a one long "thread" type set up? I have a few different things I'd like to be able to organize & document so having a way to easily navigate/make pages would be preferred. Is that optional on tumblr?

I use blogger, and while I like the ease of use, I looked into switching to Wordpress. If I didn't already own my domain I would switch, but I'd have to pay more $ and at this point I don't want to.

@runsyellowlites: Check out some of the different templates you can use! I spent $20 on my template and I love it.
However, what you are describing sounds like categories (different posts fitting under different topics) which I don't think Tumblr does. Wordpress is probably a better choice in that case!

@Mrs. Polish: You should be able to redirect your domain to a new blog. Call your hosting company up and ask them for help!

Another vote for Wordpress (of those two options).
Personally, I really like Squarespace though. If you're just doing a blog, then it might be more than you need, and it isn't free.

@pui: @Mrs.Someone: So... could I start somewhere free (it seems even Wordpress has quite a few non free options) & then have it moved if/when I'm ready? I'd hate to pay for something & then I drop the ball on it. lol

@runsyellowlites: You can't really move the entries you have already written from one service to another (like from WordPress to Blogspot), but if you buy a domain (like yourblog.com) you can have that domain point to a different location in the future if you decide to "move" to a new service.

@runsyellowlites: Its easiest to stay with the same provider. You could definitely start for free on Wordpress (with a xxx.wordpress.com domain), then pay and switch it to your own domain, keeping Wordpress as the backend. Plus, that way you don't risk losing any content.

Also, domains are really inexpensive. I just bought one the other day for $8 for the whole year.

I use wordpress. (Free account.) I like it enough! Maybe if I had more energy I'd put money into it to make it look snazzy, but for now it's fine.
