Tell me about your experience when your BLW child started solids and their daytime caregiver was not you or your SO.
I'm trying to figure out when is the best time for DH to take his 6 weeks pat leave/bonding. My mom will be our care provider for the first year or two. However, I think it may be better if DH and I tackle the early days of BLW. WDYT?

I think whoever the caretaker is just needs to know all the parameters, what's okay/not okay, what to watch out for, etc and it needs to be someone you trust. For us trust is a big thing since you never know with allergies, and DD also gagged for a while. So it was strictly family that watched her. When she was at her cousin's house, we just asked them to give her "easy" stuff like fruits/cheese and we leave the full on meals for dinner/weekends ourselves. With my mom she had watched DD eat from early on so she had a good idea on what to feed her.

Anyone that oversees feeding should have a CPR class that also covers choking in my opinion

My daughter goes to daycare but we do BLW and she only has solid foods on evenings/weekends. She only has breastmilk while at daycare. She is 7 months.

We only did blw at home until we were confident DD if the hang of the whole eating thing and then we allowed daycare to give her food.

In that scenario, I would be ok with my mom monitoring BLW. In a daycare scenario, where it's not one on one attention, I would not be comfortable until she was a better eater.

We did baby led weaning but my daughter really wasn't very interested in food until around 11 months. She wasn't in daycare so it is possible that with other kids around she would have picked it up earlier but it is impossible to know. At any rate though, it is worth considering that it might not be a quick transition. I would hate for you to have made this plan and for your baby to totally derail it!
I just retread that it is your mom who will be watching your little one, I think in your shoes I would have her watch some videos, be cpr trained and leave a book or two around. Then I would prepare the food myself and let her offer the easier things in the beginning until she is comfortable with it.

@youboots: @Cole: she'll definitely get CPR trained. I like the idea of getting her BLW prepared too. @Anya: having her give bottle for a little isn't a bad idea while the baby gets used to BLW. DH prefers taking leave while the baby is teeny tiny, I think he's secretly worried about workplace judgment if he takes time off with an older baby.

In this case I would do some practice with solids at dinner time or on weekends first and as it goes well ask your mom to do it at other times. I think it would be hard to predict when LO will be really ready to do solids, just because LO reaches 6 mos old doesn't mean he/she will be interested! That would make it hard to schedule your DH's time off. Plus I think it was important for my DH to have some time off when LO was tiny to bond, etc.

Just throwing it out there...but sometimes, even all the planning in the world won't prepare you for what might really happen. I was 100% set on BLW, had books, recipes, etc., and barely lasted a couple days before I went running for the Gerber purées.
I hope that everything you're hoping for and planning on happens, but just keep in mind that some thing might just not...work. Get that babe here and then worry about BLW in a year.

Also just a thought. We started introducing solids at dinner time. So maybe you and your DH could just do diner for the first month or so and then have your mom introduce another meal.

@Mrs. Champagne: But, when LO is only 6 months old, baby bedtime is probably going to be earlier than adult dinnertime most likely.
I've been wondering about this as well. LO is a few weeks into BLW and will begin daycare in a couple weeks. I have no idea how that will work, though just based on the mess factor alone I'm kind of assuming they won't give her solids for a while. And that BLW will be more of a weekends thing. Since I doubt the center staff are going to want to hose her down afterward. (We just put her on the floor and let the dogs lick her clean, which is super efficient.)

@PawPrints: Haha! Love it! We just have them cleaning the floor, and occasionally LO's hands...didn't think to be that efficient outsourcing to the canines!

With my first LO we did BLW-style at home but purees at the beginning with her DCP.
I had planned on doing the same with my second - but he didn't do well with BLW. He was too eager to eat but couldn't get enough of the table foods to his mouth. We had to start purees to get him to chill and let us eat! Every baby is different

Our daycare supported BLW. LO never really gagged or choked. I wouldn't worry much about it now and certainly wouldn't plan leave around BLW.

We did exclusively BLW. It's not the norm at our daycare, but they didn't fuss much other than seeming to think it was odd for the first few days. We did solids for a while at home before sending them to day care. My daughter didn't gag or choke, though, if she had I might have done it differently.

I'm personally of the belief that it's just fine to do a mix of purées and more solid food. I send LO to daycare with purées and we do a mix of purées and other solids at home. It gives her lots of variety. We didn't do any solids at daycare for the first two weeks (and gave them to her in the evening when she got home) to help her adjust. Now at 7.5 months she has two meals at daycare and one when she gets home. We have dinner ourselves after she goes to bed.
