Do you boil or bake squash to feed to your LO? My LO is 6 months old and I am reading online that its easiest to bake it and it retains all the nutrients this way, but it also says the squash should be in an inch of water when baking and I dont have enough deep dishes for the oven.
What happens if I just bake it on a dry oven tray

We baked the squash wrapped in aluminum foil and it turned out fine. We first tried steaming the squash but it got really watery when we pureed it. Baking and then pureeing turned out perfectly.

I cut in half, take seeds out And baked. I put a little bit of water in the pan, place the squash face up and cover with foil.

@mrsbells: Oops! Sorry, forgot to mention to cut in half, scoop out seeds and wrap each half in foil. Bake at 400F until tender. I forgot how long it took. About 40 to 60 minutes, I think.

I usually cut in half, get rid of the seeds, and bake it with the cut side down.

I baked it cut side up, no water and it was fine. M loves roasted butternut squash!!!

I usually roast/bake the butternut squash in the oven, no water. It almost kind of caramelizes and tastes sooo yummy! But I don't have a LO that I've fed it to yet. (I do put it in a pasta and our friend's 1 y/o LOVED it. We had to give them leftovers and later, the recipe!)

Cut in half, put in a dry casserole dish cut side up, bake for an hour or so- turns out just fine! I've always done it this way in the past for our dinners.
I don't even need to puree it, it is a nice mushy consistency at that point. Spaghetti squash was fun with all of the strings, and acorn squash was a real hit with him. I just bought a butternut to try out soon.

If you do it dry, just stab it all over and cover in foil (I drizzle olive oil--not sure if you introduced that yet). You don't have to cut it in half--takes longer to roast though.

i bake it but it doesn't need an inch of water. just a little bit inside your baking pan, cut in half, face down for 1 hour.
honestly i've tried it many ways -- face up, no water, poke holes, etc and it always turns out great!

Seriously, baking it in an inch of water makes it the same as if you steamed it in a pot. Next time, I make some for my LO I'm not going through the hassle of baking it anymore.

I did go ahead and bake it in a teeny bit of water. It was pretty easy to do. I don't plan to cook squash again for her though because I got a reaction from it
@Clementine: Do you have to peel it and cube first though to steam it? Because I guess that takes additional time

I just do it on a cookie sheet with a splash of water.

I baked it a casserole dish, face down, in an inch of water and it turned out great! I didn't know how else to cook it. I just followed the instructions in one of my baby food books.

I've never used water... oops??? it always turns out great and Cobi eats it this way.
I cut it in half, bake it face up for 45 minutes at 350 degrees and it comes out perfect!
