The Joey pigza books by jack gantos are great for boy readers!!! It's a male character, he does funny stuff, and is an easy read. Another series my boy students enjoy (even the reluctant, maybe lower, readers) is the lightening thief series by Rick riordan. One thing I suggest for my slower readers or ones that don't like reading is to read along with a book on tape. That way they are still reading it, but they get the added bonus of having someone keep the pace and add in inflection, etc. which is something lower readers don't necessarily do on their own. I think of some more and get back with you!

@runsyellowlites: I know some people who have been very successful with having their kids learn to read by playing video games.

He might really like Captain Underpants which is about a comic.

My husband said you should just let him read comics as well. He says there are some really good ones that are highly underrated.

If he's interested in comics, let him read them! It's a start, and there are so many different kinds.

@runsyellowlites: there is another series that is similar to captain underpants, comic like, but not quite so much potty humor. It's "chicken nugget boy' series. You can find them on amazon. Also, if he gets bored by lots of words on pages, there are some fun books like, middle school is worse than meatloaf, that are not chapter books. Instead, the whole story is told by receipts, post it notes, notes to friends, tickets to a movie, etc. kids like it because they don't think they are reading! They just think they are peeking in on someone's stuff.

And Goosebumps! He loved those , especially the pick-your-own-ending!
