We had a list going somewhere... And I think I have a couple of blog posts which mention books in my two part "talking to kids about race" series.
Right now we're reading the American girl Addie Walker books. We've talked about slavery, abolition, Underground Railroad, emancipation and reconstruction. What an interesting conversation those books have opened (but my daughter is almost 5).

@Mrs. Jacks: let me know if you find any books on Native Americans and race! We have a few that feature American Indian art, but I would love to find one that more explicityly talked about race since since that's the largest minority here.

@jedeve: I have a couple, but they are more focusing on Indian spiritual stories. I want to find something on the Cree Metis people since that's the tribe of my kids. If you run across anything let me know... And if you want the names of the mythology books, I'll dig them up

@daniellemybelle: Addy is beloved in our house. My older daughter dresses her every morning and for bed every night. The books are fabulous and there is nothing more precious and heartbreaking than watching your four year old being so proud of herself for sounding out the word "segregation" and then excitedly turning to me asking "mama, what's segregation" and me having to explain the whole depressing concept... I was still so proud of her for sounding it out,
