My baby girl will be 2 weeks old tomorrow...I know she is way too young for a schedule, but I'm looking for books or advice on what a "typical" day for a newborn might look like. Everything I see online seems to start at 8-12 weeks, and the advice for newborns is just "get through it".
Any ideas?? Thanks

@kpc324: just saw this as I'm scouring all sleep related things. The Secrets if the Baby Whisperer starts early and says its easier to set a schedule right away. Not going to lie it's not working on us right now but I haven't tried that hard yet. Worth a read from the library at least.

Have you tried Googling the EASY method? I've had a read of that today... though it's pretty much what we're doing at the moment (LO is 3wks) but not at set times.

Moms on call books! They have typical schedules starting from 2 weeks old. I've been loosely following their books and have had great results! I highly recommend them

Moms on call. You can go to their website and view their online course...it has sample schedules from early on (like 8 weeks). I found it super helpful. They do EASY too most all sleep books do eat, play/activity, sleep

I hate to thread jack, but any advice on how to do EASY when LO consistently falls asleep while/right after nursing? DS is 4 weeks old and I'd like to start getting somewhat of a schedule down...

@MamaMagpie: my lo couldn't stay awake after eating until she was like 8-12 weeks old. I tried it early on and she'd just fall asleep. So over time ull see him be able to stay up longer!

@kodybear: @MamaMagpie: not to thread jack ever further, but I keep reading about setting bad habits with nursing to sleep and getting them used to putting themselves to sleep early on. I've always nursed to sleep and now at 11 weeks I have no idea how to break the habit. She definitely can stay awake now so it's more challenging to get her down.

@MamaMagpie: I think MOST newborns fall asleep while eating. It's just what babies do! She will get more awake and alert as she gets older. In a couple months you'll be wishing a feeding will put her to sleep! In the beginning we just did EatSleepAwake instead of EatAwakeSleep, and as she got more and more alert we moved into EatAwakeSleep... it happened naturally for us. I never read the baby whisperer, but did google a little on EASY. I think it's most babies natural pattern anyway. By the time she was a few weeks old our schedule looked like this: I fed her, we played (gym, tummy time, book, etc.), she'd give a sleepy cue (eye rubbing was always her big one), and I'd plop her in the swing. Then when we started over, I would do everything the same except I'd put her down to sleep somewhere else - I cycled between the swing, crib, and RNP for naps to get her used to sleeping in different spots!

@Foodnerd81: You don't! haha We always rocked to sleep or used the swing at that point. She was probably 4-5 months before she would go to sleep on her own, and by 6 months she wanted nothing to do with me - no rocking, no singing!

@MamaMagpie: just thinking about what we did/do; have you tried changing him straight after a feed? Or moving him to his bouncer/swing after eating? These always wake S up, then she has no choice but to fall asleep again from awake.

@Foodnerd81: just want to put it out there that nursing to sleep is really only a bad habit if it stops working for you! If it works for you then screw what the books say

Quick question about the EASY method- how do you implement it at night? I try to keep my interaction with her to a minimum during night feedings to help her differentiate between nights and days (last night I whisper-shouted"don't talk to her!!" when he started to be all cute with her after a blowout. We both started laughing...in the morning my husband looked at me and was like "is it ok to talk to her now???"). I usually change her, feed her on one side, reswaddle, feed on the other side, and then rock her back to sleep before going back in her bassinet. The rocking back to sleep usually takes a while, so I wonder of that counts as Activity?

@kpc324: I think I've read that you skip the activity at night? You don't want them to think that night is a time for play.

@kpc324: yeah skip activity at night to teach her night time is for sleeping, not playing. Some say (I can't remember if this is baby whisperer) not to make eye contact bc even that is stimulating.
@Kemma: yeah I always sing twinkle twinkle... As I nurse her to sleep, so it's not really working.

Another vote for Moms on Call! My LO was sleeping through the night at 6 weeks old using their methods. She'll be a year old at the end of the month and we never had any regressions or anything.

Isis sleep webinars! They have one on "newborn sleep patterns" or something - free. Let me find a link..
Also just read upthread - do NOT do EASY at night Yes you can try to start getting them to sleep on their own but it's super hard before the 3 month mark.. in the MOTN, just let them sleep
