I breastfeed but my babies had bottles every day at day care. For my daughter we used Tommee Tippee and for my son I'm just using the Medela bottles that I pump into. Since your baby won't be switching back and forth between breast and bottle, I don't think you'll have much issue with needing a specific design. Unless your baby ends up having gas issues I would avoid Dr. Brown's bottles... they have SO MANY little parts to clean.

I bought a variety of bottles before the babies came but in the nicu they used Dr. Brown bottles so we've stuck with that. I ended up picking up some used bottles from a local twin mom.

The other bottles I bought or received before the babies came went unused.

I used mostly plastic but got some glass bottles as a gift. I wouldn't buy glass bottles because they were heavy. Before the babies came, I was concerned about plastic so I considered going with glass bottles. In the end, I didn't want to spend a ton on new bottles (glass or plastic) so I just went with whatever saved me money. Especially with twins. A set of new plastic Dr Brown bottles were $20 for 6 bottles (3 - 8 oz and 2 - 4 oz bottles). I wanted enough for at least one or two days of bottles.

ETA: Yeah, some people complain about parts but I've been washing it for 10 months now and it's just routine. When the babies were in the nicu and when they were out, I didn't want to switch up the routine. Plus, my son did have gas issues. Oh, Dr Brown preemie nipples are very well recommended and used often in the nicu.

We used Avent. There are two kinds...the one where the bottle is honey colored doesn't have an internal ring. We used those. I like the system because you can switch out nipples for sippy cup and spout tops.

I used 4oz Avents in the beginning, then switched to 8oz Playtex Ventair. Liked them both. I hated the Dr browns - so many pieces and hard to put together quickly in the MOTN when you need a bottle ASAP

Definitely get the Boon Lawn drying rack (not the grass size!), a few of their twig accessories and a good dishwasher basket (if you have a dishwasher). I have the Boon Orb bottle warmer and it is awesome.

@Goldengirl: We chose to handwash them a long with all breat pump parts. I personally dont think the dishwasher is as effective on baby bottles and pump parts but I know people that had success with it

I have both a grass rack and a spinning rack, they are just different and some people have a preference for one over the other. I like the spinning rack for smaller parts and the grass rack for spoons and such now that she is older.

@Goldengirl: The Dr. Brown bottles has the bottle, vent system (2 parts) and the cap ring and nipple. It's all supposed to help with gas. My issue with my son was Similac Neosure formula was too gassy for him, but my daughter had hardly any issues on it. If there are gas issues, you can try some exercises and over the counter supplement (gas drops, gripe water). We switched his formula when he was up all night in pain from gas and nothing helped. At 10 months, she is still on Neosure and my son switched to Enfamil Enfacare at 3 months and is still on it.

Oh, at the peak (2-3 hours between feedings) each baby had about 8-9 bottles a day. I wanted 1-2 days worth of bottles so I think I got 15 bottles on one size. I also had other sizes. I started out using the 2 oz, then 4 oz then 8 oz.

In the end we went with glass Avent Bottles. I like them a lot and we haven't had any leaking issues at all.

- Hated all the little parts of Dr. Browns. Ain't nobody got time for that. Well, at least not me, as a working mom.

- We have 2 dishwasher baskets. We use them for bottle nipples, pacifiers, bottle caps, infant spoons, and the Medela valves.

- We don't have a drying rack. We just let them air-dry overnight with the dishwasher open or on a towel on the countertop.

- We use the dishwasher exclusively. I hate hand washing an worry about items not getting clean enough.

@Goldengirl: Dr. Brown's parts supposedly help prevent gas & thus fussiness. They are "anti-colic" but true colic can't be "cured." All bottles have different designs so they have 3-5 parts. Off the top of my head, Lasinoh & Tommee Tippee have only 3 parts, MAM has 4, Dr. Brown's has 5. I think Munchin Latch have 3-4. MAM were also really hard to heat up because of the design on the bottom.

In terms of size, I think a mix of 4 and 8 oz bottles would be helpful. You will also want to think about the width of the bottles in relation to your diaper bag pockets - Tommee Tippee is VERY wide.

I'd ask around to your friends if you could check out their bottles, or visit a Babies R Us (though I think they're only in the package there.)

We've been happy with Avent Natural bottles. I started off breastfeeding and supplementing, but we've been doing just formula for the last 5.5 months. I like that there's less parts to clean. We run them through the dishwasher every couple of days and hand wash in between. We have enough bottles to get through about 2 days before we have to wash more, but it still seems like we wash them all the time. My daughter will be 1 in just under a month, and I'm really looking forward to not washing bottles anymore! I also second the recommendations for dishwasher baskets and the lawn drying rack. (I've been thinking about getting an extra grass to keep next to our lawn because it seems like we always have extra bottles, cups, bowls, etc. that we need to wash and dry, now that we're transitioning to sippy cups and she's eating real meals.

@DesertDreams88: Dr. Browns only have 2 additional parts if you exclude the bottle and the collar where the nipple goes.

Though, if you plan to travel with them, you'll need round disc to keep the formula from coming out of the nipple.

I have twins and the bottles aren't that bad. I do have a routine with washing and have 3 bottle racks.

We used Playtex with drop in liners. Amazing not to have to scrub bottles out. I work a lot of hours and also do not have a dishwasher. Lifesavers.

A vote for ThinkBaby. as baby gets older you can add handles, trade out the nipple for a sippy spout and ultimately convert to a straw cup.

Word to the wise - if you do glass bottles, still get some plastic or stainless ones for when you're on the go. I learned that the hard way when one of my Avent Natural bottles shattered all over the floor of a restaurant. Now I do primarily glass at home but Avent plastic for daycare and when we're out of the house. We hand wash the plastic ones except once a week when we run them through the dishwasher to sterilize.

@Goldengirl: I'm in the minority in that I hated the Dr. Browns bottles. I registered for them due to their great reviews, but I hated them. LO didn't love them either.
Like others have said, I'd hold off on getting too many of one kind, because you never know if your baby will be picky about the bottles.
We ultimately ended up with Lansinoh mOmma (loved, loved, loved those) and Avent classic.
And I wholeheartedly agree that the Dr. Brown's formula mixer is a holy grail item. I mean, such a timesaver and so great at eliminating bubbles/froth from the formula. YOU MUST GET IT!
