My coworker just gave me 12 Dr. Brown 8 oz. bottles that they aren't using anymore. Do you NEED 4 oz. bottles for infants? Or could I get away with the bigger ones? I'll have to bottle feed starting by at least 8-10 weeks b/c DD will be going to daycare.
Anyone have a good resource on bottle sizing and infant age? I feel pretty stupid that I haven't done more research on this yet...

You don't really, you can just fill up the bigger bottles to however much you need.

LO is 16 days, but I've found that I like using the smaller bottles, probably not a need though.

Definitely not a need, but they "feel" better for teeny tiny babies, IMO? I felt like she was such a big girl when we started using the larger bottles!

DS is 4.5 months and we've been transitioning the past couple weeks from small to big bottles. I can't imagine giving him an big 8 oz at 1 month with just a couple oz in it. We also used dr b's and they have been great.

it depends on the baby. some outgrow the small bottles really quickly, esp if you're formula feeding. some don't drink that much and never outgrow the small bottles (like olive).
you don't *need* the small bottles... but I wonder if they reduce gas since there is less air?

wouldn't there be too much air in an 8oz bottle if you're only giving a couple ounces out of it? Genuinely asking!

We never used a bottle larger than the 4OZ b/c LO never drank more than that. I personally would not have wanted to use the larger size... I think there would be less air in the smaller bottles and they're easier to clean.

No necessary, but they're definitely easier to use in the beginning. I don't think the size of the bottle has anything to do with air intake. If you're using the bottle correctly, there won't be any air in the nipple for them to suck in, no matter what size it is.

DS is 3.5 months and I've only ever used 4oz bottles. He usually takes only 3oz per bottle. I have two 8oz Dr. Brown's bottles that I've never used, and they look huge and uncomfortable compared to the 4oz DB bottles.

We had to bottle feed our LO in the beginning because he was a preemie and breastfeeding was too much work, so the smaller bottles were great. We have only recently at 6 months transitioned him to the big bottles. The nice thing about the small bottles is that he can hold onto them, which he loves!

I bought the small bottles just in case she'd get more gas from the bigger ones. Now at 6mo I use both. The small ones are good for middle of the night feelings when I know she won't eat so much because she's half asleep.

I definitely think its better to use smaller bottles in the beginning. The 8ox bottles will seem huge when the baby is only drinking 50 ml at a time. The bigger bottles do have more air if there is less liquid in them

Another thing to consider - check the nipple flow on the 8oz bottles. A lot of the bigger bottles come with faster flow nipples which would not work well for a tiny baby.
