When did you have your first drink ? I'm not a big drinker at all - at most I will have a couple of glasses of wine. At 8 weeks pp I haven't had a drink because I'm not sure how that works with breastfeeding but DH and I are going to try to have date night this weekend and I would love a glass of wine with dinner !

At almost 6 months pp I still haven't. A wont take bottles so I am to nervous to have alcohol.

Baby was born mid October and I think I had my first drink in December? I always wait till LO is tucked up in bed for the night and only have one drink but I'm not a big drinker anyway.
From what I've read alcohol in breastmilk metabolises the same as in blood and some sources advise that if you're ok to drive you're ok to nurse.

I think 8 weeks pp I drank for the first time. It was when DS was more consistent with his bedtime and I could count on him getting a nice long stretch of sleep. I would enjoy a glass of wine after he went to bed.

@Mrs.B: only 4 months pp but same, without bottles to fall back on I'm too scared to do it...
@coacheswife123: I think the rule is to allow 2 hours per drink for it to get out of your system. I think Mother Risk has a detailed chart on it (sorry, doing this from my phone or would find it for you).

@Kemma: that's what I've heard too about being ok to drive, ok to bf.
Some LCs say that the best time to have a drink is WHILE you're breastfeeding. Seems silly but makes sense!

I've had the occasional beer and glass of wine. The LC/RN who taught my bf-ing class said the same "ok to drive, ok to breastfeed."

My LC said okay to drive means okay to breastfeed.

My LC said that if you have a small glass of wine, your blood alcohol level will be very low, so milk alcohol will be even lower. The pediatrician told me to have a glass of wine before bef to relax us both!

I had a drink at 4 or 5 days PP I think. I believe in the ok to drive, ok to drink philosophy as well.

I never had a drink or anything with alcohol the entire time I was breastfeeding. We don't drink anyway usually so it wasn't a big deal to skip it for the last 4ish years.

Idea when she'd need to feed again. Now that I know her routine more, I'll have a glass or wine after her last feeding. I had half of a margarita on my birthday a couple weeks back but I didn't get to relax and enjoy it! -
@wheres_c: I've been thinking about getting those! Have you ever had a negative? As in, it tells you that you should NOT BF?
I'm thinking I'll probably have a glass of wine at K's one-month dinner party. We'll probably bottle-feed at the party anyways so I won't be as worried. But who knows... I DID buy a new bottle of wine my last week of pregnancy in anticipation of having a glass at night sometime soon!

A few days after we got home from the hospital I had a glass of wine and still do with dinner most nights. I usually only have 1 beer or wine with food, just like if I was driving.

I don't think I had an actual full drink for at least 9 months after LO arrived? It just wasn't a priority for me and once we got out of the habit of drinking, I didn't miss it much. I also didn't want the headache of remembering how long it had been and whether it was ok to nurse, but that's just me.

Having a beer or a glass of wine was something I was very much looking forward to after pregnancy. I probably had my first glass when LO was two weeks old. I'll have one (and a few times two) after LO goes down for the night. Two is definitely my limit. I had a beer after she went down tonight but she woke up early. I have the test strips so we busted them out, and I was OK. We have a small freezer stash if we need it. We did have to feed her some pumped milk after I braved a margarita two weeks ago (knocked me on my ass - no more hard liquor for a while). We also believe that if I feel OK to drive, I'm OK to feed LO.

This table lets you know when alcohol generally leaves your system based in your weight and the amount of alcohol you've consumed. For me, it's 2.5 hrs after a 5 oz drink of wine. -
I think I had my first real glass of wine probably 8 weeks PP. I had sips here and there before that though. LO is 7 mos now and I enjoy a glass of wine most nights after he's gone to bed.

I had one beer 4-6 weeks PP. I used those little alcohol strips that you dip into your breastmilk and depending on what color it turns, the strip lets you know if you are okay to breastfeed. I was always extremely stressed out waiting for the alcohol to leave my system though, so I don't know if it was worth it.

@coacheswife123: there are strips that you can use to test your breastmilk for alcohol. If I was going to drink, I always waited until after DD was down for the night and I would test my milk before going to bed.
