@creativemomma15: I've never heard of this before...I wonder what the statistics really are on it. I would probably continue to breastfeed as long as LO wanted to...but again I guess it would depend on how common a miscarriage was during breastfeeding.

I can't imagine this is true on a large scale. It's probably happened to someone somewhere but lots of women get pregnant while nursing. Plus how would they ever attribute a miscarriage to breastfeedig?

My OB said breastfeeding while pregnant was fine.
I got pregnant shortly after my LO turned 1. I nursed throughout my pregnancy and have a healthy baby boy.
(I dried up, but DD liked to comfort nurse and towards the end I think she got a lot of colostrum).

Wow - I've never heard that! I have heard that babies will often ween themselves because the milk is/tastes different during pregnancy but I've never heard that it was a risk to the pregnancy. I would do more research/ask other drs before you decide.

I've never heard this either. My best friend is an ob and was pregnant while she was still breastfeeding.

I got pregnant before LO turned 8 months and I nursed until she was 9ish months. I stopped because my production was way down not because of fears of miscarriage. I would have continued if I was still making milk!

I have her that nipple stimulation causes uterine contractions, so I was also confused about breastfeeding while pregnant

I was not still nursing when I had my miscarriages but I had just weaned prior to the first and the doctor tested me for elevated prolactin to see if that was causing IF issues. So I think there is something to the idea of hormone levels being off. Obviously lots of people go on to bf while pregnant though.

I found out I was pregnant with DD when she was 9 months and I was EBF her. I stopped EBF around 11 months because my milk dried up and it became painful.

I breastfed through my entire pregnancy with LO#2 with no problems besides discomfort.

Unless you know you normally have low progesterone, it probably isn't a problem. But when pregnant, your progesterone usually rises, and that can cause your milk to dry up.

I'd follow up with a doctor and ask their advice.

@winniebee: i wondered this too, as I had a m/c while breastfeeding. I asked my doctor, and she said that plenty of women successfully bf while pregnant, but it's not impossible for it to have something to do with it. I don't know if there's a scientific answer, but it seems to me that there's at least some small correlation (nursing causing uterine contractions).
