After our one miscarriage and D&C they did basic testing. We didn't get any in-depth results, but at that point we weren't looking for that. We were offered more involved testing, but my OB said they don't usually advise that unless there are 3+ MC in a row or unless there are any red flags in mom/dad health. At my 2 week follow-up appointment they had results. Insurance covered it all.

I know Mr. and Mrs. Bee had testing done after their second miscarriage and found out the baby had a chromosomal abnormality. I believe Mrs. Bee blogged about it so check out her archives for more details.

I'm the type of person where I always want as much information as possible. So this is definitely something I would want to pursue.

I had it done after my m/c and D&C. It was my first/only, but my OB suggested it and I'm SO glad we did it. We were able to find out that we lost the baby due to a chromosomal issue. Because we knew what happened, when we got pregnant with this baby, we were offered tests to be sure he didn't have the same issue. It also gave me a bit of closure and helped me to heal from the m/c.

I had tissue testing done for a missed miscarriage and D&C about a year ago. In my case it was our first loss, but the pregnancy was a result of IVF...so my RE was more inclined to test.

I was not able to get a clear answer beforehand, but the testing was ultimately covered 100% by my insurance.

We got one of the newest tests done where they do full genetic testing (the company was called Natera). It turned out that the fetus had a fatal trisomy, and the testing was able to determine that the extra chromosome came from me. One warning, the test also tells you the sex of the baby...though I'm sure you could ask your OB not to report that. I was unprepared for that bit of information, which somehow made the loss harder.

There is more standard testing where they do basic karyotyping (no analysis at the gene level or determination of which parent contributed which chromosome). I think this testing is more likely to be covered by insurance...though it would obviously be less informative.

As you recover from this loss, if you decide to continue to try getting pregnant you might consider seeing a reproductive endocrinologist who is familiar with (and believes in) immune issues. Many doctors won't diagnose repeat pregnancy loss until you have three losses, so I'm glad your OB is proactive...at your age even two losses is unusual.

I had a miscarriage in January as well, 9 weeks along, and elected to have a d&c. Since I was having the d&c we opted to have the testing done. It was covered by insurance and we got the results within a week and met with a genetic counselor to review.
I have no regrets having it done. It provided some peace of mind that it was nothing that could have been prevented and the likelihood of it happening again was slim.

@SweetiePie: I'm so very sorry for your losses. My best friend gave birth to a baby with trisomy 18. To say it was a tough experience is an understatement. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. It seems like you are on the right track with everything you are doing.

@SweetiePie: Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was going to post more about my results, but it sounds like you now have more information.

In case it's helpful, my understanding is that a "partial trisomy" or "mosaic" means that you both passed along the right number of chromosomes, but there was a cell division error early in the development process of your fetus...so that the cells that resulted from the error had an extra chromosome while those that didn't had a normal number of chromosomes. Since cell division is controlled by your DNA, having a higher potential for error is probably hereditary.

That said, it's not impossible that you can have a normal pregnancy (you and your DH both have the right number of chromosomes). There is also very good early genetic testing available for most of the typical trisomies, including the non-invasive fetal DNA testing. I believe those tests are slightly less accurate for mosaic conditions, but not much.

And as was mentioned above, there is the possibility of doing pre-implantation genetic diagnosis should you choose to go the IVF route. Though keep in mind that since they only test one or two cells from an early (5-day) blastocyst, there is a chance they can miss a mosaic. There are also other reasons that this is considered unreliable...it has a high false positive rate.

Hang in there. Just because you have a predisposition toward mosaicism does not mean you can't have children...your odds are probably still very high for having a normal child. It's really easy to get caught up in all the odds and relative risks and lose sight of the fact that even with some of the most severe risks the odds are still in your favor to have a healthy pregnancy.

We did get tested, like Bee mentioned above. One thing that was unexpected was that they slipped and told us the sex of the baby... that wasn't something we were prepared for!

If we could do it again, maybe we would've told them not to mention that? Just something to think about!

@SweetiePie: There is a low likelihood of balanced translocation, so I would just take it one step at a time and look into the testing because it's not guaranteed to be from a parent. (Though the calculus may be slightly different after 2 miscarriages). I have friends who were sure that one of them carried the partial trisomy that their daughter got. Turns out it was a de novo (brand new) mutation.

@SweetiePie: my friends baby lived a few hours. the trisomy occurrence was a random thing for my friend and her next baby was as healthy as can be. As was her first baby. I'm sure your tests will guide you in the right direction in the future. Science is a great thing, isn't it?
