Dd is 4 months old and is rolling around in her sleep. She hits her head on the crib bars when she wakes up there are limbs in between the bars and we are always loosing pacis.
I'm on the fence with getting bumpers. Do any of you use them?

@bunnylove08: Subscribing I have the same question! E is almost 4 months and he rolls over to where his face is right against the slats and his legs go through the holes.

DH and I are thinking about getting one of those mesh bumpers...H wiggles to the side of the crib every night and occasionally I spot a hand hanging out through the slats so I have to keep moving her back to the middle...

No but we were talking about it last night. We put E in his crib for the first time and he sleeps across the short side and I'm worried about his head. And his limbs when he's napping and isn't in a sleep sack.

I used a breathable bumper for several months!

I used a bumper for both of my lo's because they always stuck their little limbs out and get stuck

We don't yet and aren't planning to, but if LO ends up hitting her head a lot or sticking various limbs out, we'd go with the mesh ones.

I just took the bumper off because DS is all over his crib but afraid he'd smoosh his gave and not roll back over.

We started using bumpers for this reason when LO was 5 months...And took them away at 8 months when she started standing in her crib and using the bumpers to hoist herself higher.

We had mesh bumpers and never put them on - I can only think of one or two times when my LO got an arm stuck. And he never sticks out his legs since he's in a sleep sack. We did have to deal with paci's falling out constantly, though - that was annoying.

I started using the reg bumpers at 4 mths and when she was able to use them to hoist herself up I lowered the crib. I was hesisitant at first but she has had no probelms with them and now doesn't get limbs stuck between the rails.

We use a breathable bumper. I was/am uncomfortable with the thought of a padded bumper.

We use breathable bumpers. Even at 18 months we keep them in, LO still gets her limbs stuck in there if we don't. She has a sleep sack on so I'm not too worried about her trying to climb out and falling over.

LO is almost 14 months we bought bumpers, but took them out before we put LO in crib for the first time. He has slept many times with an arm dangling out or his head pressed up against the rails. It doesn't bother him. I would rather not have to worry that his head was pressed up against a bumper. I also like that it has better airflow in his crib.

DS just moved to his crib last week and sleeps the short way as well. So far we haven't had any issues with him waking up because of this, but I'd only consider a breathable one if we were to use them.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Nope. I could never get them to work on my crib so, no bumpers. After a while, she stopped bashing herself into the bars.

I think I'm going to look into breathe able bumpers dd is too long to sleep the short way. Would breathe able bumpers cushion her head . I hear her squeal when she flips over and hits her head

I registered for the mesh bumpers because I'm afraid of him sticking his limbs out between the slats of the crib... and I'm too afraid of the regular bumpers to put those in his crib.

Yep I do. It's pretty necessary now, she is wild in her crib.
I guess I'm in the minority.
persimmon / 1361 posts
Nope... AAP recommends against them for SIDS and you have to take them out once they can pull to stand so they don't use them to climb up the side of the crib. It just didn't seem worth the $ for the short amount of time they can be used. BUT this is how we woke a few mornings ago...

@Amelieisme: oh no!
We have a breathable bumper that keeps DD from getting her arms and legs caught.

People keep talking about how LOs use them to climb out of the crib, but I don't see how that works in practice. In theory, yes. When LO actually stands on the bumper they just compress down to mattress level. They give her a maybe .5 inch advantage.

I had them for my older sons because the AAP hadn't released that they were bad yet. We had them in my daughters in the beginning for looks when she was still in her bassinet. Then took them out. They come with the crib sets which now seem silly since we didn't use much of it.

@Amelieisme: hahhahahahah omgosh! So cool how he stayed asleep despite his positioning
We use a mesh/breathable bumper. It def does the job and is safe too.
We do own a padded bumper but I wouldn't use that until he was a lot older...maybe like 10m? That is if his movements become so aggressive that I fear he may hurt himself. By then I guess his ability to wake himself up (if breathing was restricted) would be better since he is much older.

We use a breathable bumper too! Prevents pacis / loveys from falling out of the crib and arms/legs from sticking thru.
persimmon / 1161 posts
We just got breathable bumpers because his swaddled feet (inside a swaddleme blanket) were sticking out of the slats.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@Weagle: I agree with you, but I think as they get older sometimes all they need is that little .5" advantage to get over the side of the crib.
We have had a breathable one on her crib since day one. I love it. Nothing falls out, her legs/arms stay in, I don't worry about suffocation, and I don't think she can use it to climb out. It was the perfect compromise for me.

@Amelieisme: Aww that's kind of cute! Your LO must be a GREAT sleeper!
