Both boys have a bump on the back of their head that is probably about an inch to an inch and a half in diameter. It's been there since they were pretty small, but I don't particularly remember if they had it as newborns. I've always assumed it was just a weird baby-head-growth thing, but then DH and my MIL were discussing it, and now they haves worried. Is this normal or something I need to see our ped. about?

Neither of my kids have bumps on their heads.
I'm not sure if it's something to worry about though..? I would ask your Ped just in case for peace of mind.

I would probably just ask the ped at your next check-up. Most people don't have perfectly round heads so I think you are probably right and it isn't anything bad. But it never hurts to ask the doc.

DD has a little bump on her head.. She was diagnosed with plagiocephaly @ 4 months and started wearing a corrective helmet last month. It was never super noticeable, but it bothered me enough to get the helmet. I would just ask your ped.
Btw, DDs bump doesn't look like your sons'. She has a flat spot on one side and a little bump on the other.

My son has a pretty lumpy head. He pedi checks his head at each visit. Part of it is because I had a vacuum assisted delivery and he had plagiocephaly...and his head is still flattening out and has gotten a lot better at 10 months. I wouldn't worry--I bet your pedi would have said something by now if it was abnormal.

I have seen adults with bumps on their heads. So I guess its pretty normal but just ask at your next appt. As long they are happy and healthy I would try not worry too much (I know we worry about all things real and imaginary when it comes to our babies!)

Ours had a bumpy spot and wears a helmet for plagiocephaly.
Do they sleep in rock and plays?

@wheres_c: They slept in RNPs for the first 8 weeks, but moved to cribs after that. They're 4 months now.

@LaineysMom: Dd had this too.
Dd had plagio and brachycephaly..but we didn't do the helmet due to insurance (we finally just switched but she's kind of old for that now.) Her hair will cover her big flat spot. I found out at her neurologist appt (insurance wanted neuro to recommend it) that it's partially genetic. It seems to look better now that she's starting to get some hair and she is mobile.

@Mrs. Blue: mine had a bump like that a little, but your LOs seem to have a lot of roundness/fullness so even if they had some plagio it's probably really mild. Ours was much more severe than what your photos show.

@mrbee: Thanks! I remember reading that now, but that was way back before I had reason to worry about flat heads so it wasn't on my radar! @Mrs. Jacks always has great info for us non-medical people. I wish I would have read that before because I totally did not know about alternating the way you lay them down each night (though like she said, the boys usually turn their heads several times).

@Mrs. Blue: Yeah, she had a bump sort of as @laineysmom described. Except dd's was flat spot with bump under it.

@wheres_c: yay! Your LO can be Lainey's helmet buddy! Unfortunately she only wears hers 1/2 time bc she's been getting heat rash, but at 2 weeks her measurements went from 9mm to 6mm!
@googly-eyes: yeah, our insurance sucked. The $$$ just goes toward our deductible.
