Bunk bed recs?

Does anyone have a bunk bed that you love?

We’re in a pickle! We just got a bunk bed for our girls about a month ago and it’s already broken :shocked: the guardrail came off and lo2 fell off the bed with it, we’re lucky she didn’t break her arm or worse!! (Note: avoid the crate & barrel wrightwood bed— the guardrail only attached at the bottom with 4 small screws...) my kids aren’t even THAT rambunctious, this never should have broken so easily

It is SO hard to pick out a sturdy bed online so id love any recs!

I was just asking this on my local mom group and got several recommendations for the ikea mydal - said it stayed sturdy even moving it between houses and taking it apart.

@nana87: wow! I can’t believe the crate and barrel bunk broke that easily! We love their couches, but I have a kitchen table from c&b and it’s awful. Worst buy ever. Did you raise h*ll with c&b and make them refund your money?

And I’m surprised by the quality of some ikea things, so I wouldn’t rule out a bunk bed from there.

@agold: we're def raising hell with c&b! they were actually supposed to send a different bed (different model!) as a replacement today and completely flaked, on the day when it was supposed to be delivered, and now we can't get a straight answer out of them.

this is so compounded with the pandemic--we've just moved and have been buying a lot of new furniture, but everything from dining chairs to beds is backordered or delayed deliveries. like, the Ikea bed would be a great option but it says unavailable for delivery to us in NYC and the closest one in stock is outside of DC!!

so my girls are literally sleeping on mattresses on the floor for the unforeseeable future, in a small room that doesn't have much room for anything besides two mattresses...

@bhbee: This is the one that we have and it has been super sturdy through two moves already

Something you could do is look on your local used listings. I'm doing that for other IKEA stuff that is out of stock too...

@codeitall: can I ask you then, do you have (or have you had in prior locations) lower ceilings? I believe our ceilings are 8’ and want to make sure it doesn’t feel like the top bunk is too close to it (and maybe that will also help my 5 year old not kill himself when he inevitably jumps off ... )

We've only lived in places built after 2000, so I think we've always had 9 foot ceilings. However, they are short enough that my son around 45" tall can fully stand on the top bunk. I think the short ceilings may be in your favor to curtail the jumping once he's tried it

This is the bed we had in NYC for our boys. Nothing special but it is solid pine. They are using it as two twins now.

It is twin over full so not sure that fits your needs, but Amazon says it is in stock. But the Dorel brand is the actual manufacturer of a lot of furniture—we originally saw this one at pier one or similar and then ended up finding it for cheaper here, so you may want to look at the brand.

We have had this one for 2+ years and it feels super sturdy!

We have the Ikea Mydal and have been very happy with it. It is super sturdy. I'd say we've had it for about a year now. And, I second what others have said about checking out Craigslist/FB Market for it. That's where I found an Ikea storage bench that was sold out in stores throughout my state.
