The post about Christmas gifts got me thinking that now that the boys are getting a little older, perhaps getting some camping gear and starting to at least camp in the backyard is a good idea. DH has talked about doing this with them so it would be a good Christmas gift for him. Does anyone have recommendations for tents, sleeping bags, and other camping gear that they've loved?

My kids love their REI kindercone sleeping bags. I kind of hate our 5 person tent. If you are going to be car camping I would get a giant tent that you can stand up in - there is just no reason to be cramped up together! I always wish we had more room and think our too small tent is one of the reason that I really do not love camping.

Buy a tent that’s like double the amount of people you want to actually sleep! A 3-4 person tent is tiny, especially if you want to keep your stuff in there. Not as relevant for backyard of course. We have a 3-4 person tent for playing in, and a 6 person tent for actual camping. Also, look into small cots off the ground rather than air mattresses as they are a PITA and get cold even in spring if you don’t layer underneath yourself. My 5 year old really likes headlamps too! And his own folding camp chair that’s kid sized. Telescoping metal marshmallow/hot dog sticks!

@hitchhiker: haha totally same! Our real camping tent is ENORMOUS but it is amazing. It might actually be an 8 person tent and it’s only usually my older son and I that camp in it

@muffinsmuffins: yes, I think an 8 person tent sounds like the right size for up to 4 people. More than that and I would be insisting on two tents!

I have the Marmot Limestone 6 person tent and I think it's a good size (2 adults,. 2yo, and a baby). It's big enough to stand up in and a pack n play, but not so big to get lost in. Also, 2 doors are required for me.
My toddler is obsessed with my headlamp, but I think she's too young for one of her own. I'm planning on getting a couple of glowsticks for our next trip.

If camping is something you know you love and will do often, definitely the expensive stuff is worth it. If you're not sure how well it will go over, Academy has some great options for a low price. I bought a 4 person tent in 2012 for $40 and use it multiple times a year and it's still going strong!
Sierra Trading Post and Campmor are places to look with high quality items at a more midrange price than REI.
