My 3 1/2 year old REALLY wants to go camping, we are not campers. The thought of staying in a tent makes me cringe, but because she's so into it we said "okay we will go for one night." The thing is we have a 14 month old who is mobile and this just scares me. if you are campers, how do you do it. Did you just get a huge tent that is big enough for pack n play in addition to an air mattress and sleeping bag (because I'm not sleeping on the ground.) I'm so clueless.

Our nieces will be here for part of the summer and they/we really want to go camping. I think we are going to ease into it and camp in our backyard. We have a tent, fire pit and big backyard. We'll cook over the fire pit, everyone but DD2 and I will sleep in the tent. I think it's a nice way to ease into camping for the girls.
I know a lot of people go camping with babies. But being in a tent with a mobile baby sounds like zero fun for me! LOL

We are taking the kids camping/floating in 2 weeks. We have a 3.5 year old and almost 2 year old. We have a large tent for the travel crib and a couple of air mattresses.
If they love the outdoors, I am sure they will have a blast! I am planning a little nature scavenger hunt (gather sticks, rocks, leaves, etc).
I think the key is to go in with very low (or no) expectations

We have a massive tent (3 room!) and we made out okay. The only thing I didn't expect was my Mother bear to come out, and I did.not.sleep. Kids did great, slept great, one even got a tick on him (!!!) but I just laid awake being protective. We had DD on single air mattress (she was almost 3 when we went) and DS (just over 1) in his pnp. Another biggie for us was screened dining tent. That way it contained them, and we could roll around on the floor like at home (we put a tarp down, then grass mat on top) and play which was really nice (when we weren't at the beach). We definitely learned we wouldn't camp at that spot again, but it was a fun experience. We had our dog with us two, brought our double stroller, we literally moved in there (so much stuff!) but it was great. We are camping three weeks this summer and I think we will forego the pnp for my DS and get him an air mattress just for it taking up less space in the car.

And I meal planned down to everything cut up and "prepped" ahead of us going as well, not having to do that stuff once there was so nice. Everything was done, just had to chuck it together and cook.

@sunnyday: the food is weird to me too, does it really stay cold enough in a cooler? I mean we have a nice 5 day ice cooler, but milk, dairy, eggs, ect. are okay in it?

@LuLu Mom: We had two coolers, to give lots of space for ice and did fine over a weekend trip. I was actually super impressed! I froze ice blocks (just used square tupperware a froze a couple days ahead of time) and put I think two in each to be a bigger/lasting cold, packed the food, then cubes all around that. Meals I prepped in advance and then in foil, obviously then went into a ziploc, too.

I LOVE camping! But, it's not easy to camp with toddlers... Why not get a cheap tent like this one and camp out in the yard for one night to see if she likes it?

(we found ours at walmart, but it was a "girly" version with pink flowers - very cute)We did that for our girls when we had to cancel our camping trip a few weeks ago due to 500 year floods

Could you find a "glamping" option? It seems crazy to invest in all the stuff you will need if you aren't really camping people. Or even a cabin at a state park or something? It might make it way simpler with a young toddler.
We took our daughter a few times last year and she just slept between us but I know that's not fire everyone. The pnp is a great plan though if for no other reason than having a safe place to plop the baby while you cook or whatever.
