@mrs. wagon: hehe there are regular bed frames for king beds too! But king beds always have two smaller box frames. Our California king is actually sitting in a larger king ikea frame. Not all their frames are the same size!

Our King has a regular bed frame - headboard and footboard with frame you set the boxspring/mattress in type setup like any other size bed

The boxspring is split on our King, as was split on our Queen as well. Living in New England, you know how teeny our staircases can be; a split boxspring is pretty necessary to get your bed into many places (since the box doesn't bend like a mattress does).

Many IKEA Kings don't require a boxspring at all, so maybe that's what you were seeing?

I don't know if this helps but I know some Ikea beds require you to buy rails that go across the bed frame. It supports the mattress and, also, it doesn't require that you need a box spring.

We have a memory foam mattress and it simply goes on top of the wooden rails on our bed frame. No need for a box spring for our queen sized bed. Not sure about king sized beds since I don't have one.

@mrs. wagon: I think all upholstered headboards are generally sold separately!

@mrs. wagon: It's probably like West Elm's system, where you buy the headboard separate from the frame? The holes in the headboard are where the frame would attach with screws. If you look at the bedroom gallery, it looks like the headboards are all meant to go with frames and they don't actually mean that legs attach directly onto the mattress - some of their language is kind of funky!
