It's a small little black/purple box that you hook up to your TV... and it features streaming programs of all types - Amazon PRIME, Hulu+, Netflix, etc...
You need a paid account with those services to actually use them, but it's just a device that allows you to stream through your TV instead of just watching shows through a computer.

It's basically a small PC designed just for streaming content. Apple TV is similar.

@Mrs. High Heels: I've also wondered. So, say I wanted this in the bedroom where we have no cable. Does it just work with your wireless internet? Do you need anythign more than an outlet and have it connected to your TV?

@LuLu Mom: I believe it uses WiFi, so you don't need an ethernet port in your bedroom to set it up, but you would need a wireless network in your home.

@LuLu Mom: yes as long as you have internet and an outlet it'll work. It's amazingly easy to set up. If you have an iPhone there's also a roku app that acts like a remote control. So I often use my phone to navigate my roku.

We got one recently and it's nice if you watch a lot of Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu, etc. We love it and got it on sale - they go on sale pretty often. It's super convenient and it frees up a computer for use, too.
@LuLu Mom: I think you just have to make sure to buy a wireless model.

Yeah, I don't get Roku and Apple TV either. I currently have a old macbook that I use to stream shows to my TV. Works for me.

If you have a newer game console that can stream Netflix, etc. or a smart TV, then you don't need a Roku (or if you're like @bluestriped bee: and just stream through your laptop). We use it in our living room because we don't have any gaming consoles hooked up, our blu-ray isn't a "smart" player, and neither is our TV. Roku/Netflix got us through maternity/paternity leave with Breaking Bad

@Mrs. High Heels: thanks for the iphone app tip! just downloaded it. super easy and then i can hide the roku remote since it's R's favorite thing to put in her mouth right now.
