I'm definitely not a grammar guru, but I think you just leave it as is!

I think a name always gets an apostrophe-s. So "Mary Jones's last day at this school will be x/x/xx." I was taught that apostrophe-no-s (Jones') indicates plural possessive and adding -es (Joneses) would make Jones plural without the possessive.

But it seems the jury is still out on the English language, per this site: https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/35654/joness-or-jones. Either Jones's or Jones' should be fine.

My maiden name ends in an s. I always learned it as Mary Jones' last day.

But I agree with PP that said that seems to have changed. I now see Mary Jones's last day, more frequently. I still do it as Jones' though.

If you're still unsure, you could always rephrase it: "Mary Jones will be attending this school until x/x/xx."

Jones' That is what I learned. I don't do it the way I see it. That would be bad. I look at kids' writing nearly everyday.

@mediagirl: you do add the apostrophe at the end to show possession. And I found this! And I know your last name isn't Jones but looks like Jones would be Mary Jones's because you pronounce an s at the end like Joneses.

Personally, I would still not add 's based on what I learned from the modern internet. I'm from the old school.

Okay, so first things first: You need an apostrophe because this is a possessive. Put one there, right after the concluding "s" of your last name.

Whether you also add another "s" after the apostrophe is a matter of style and up to you. Personally, I think it is cluttered.

Both of these are correct (but #1 looks better, IMO):

1) Jones'
2) Jones's

@honeybear: Agreed. Correct or not, it is not my cup o' tea. So I wouldn't, couldn't, didn't.

My married name ends in S and we do Mary Jones's.

This partly has to do with how the possessive is pronounced. So if the wheels belong to a bus, you would say the bus's wheels - saying the s sound twice. Whereas for something like multiple socks that have stripes - you would say the socks' stripes - saying the s sound once. Does the makes sense?
So in this case, you would say Mary Jones's last day...

Hmm. My son's first name ends in S and I always do s'. No extra s.

I just consulted my handy AP Stylebook, which says only add an apostrophe to singular proper names ending in S. So "Mary Jones' last day." That's what we use at work, so that's what I would do

I learned it as Mary Jones'.

(My pet peeve is when people misuse apostrophes and plurals.. like when people put on their cards "love, the brown's" ...but I guess there is no consensus on this one.)
