My 3.5 year old can't stop coughing, I'm curious if there are any type of cough meds that can be given at her age. My guess is she's too young, but thought I'd ask you guys for any tips! I have her propped up with the humidifier, she had ibuprofen but she's still miserable...

If it's a wet cough our ped has recommended giving Benadryl before bed to dry things up. But it makes my DD hyper so that's a no go for us!

We've been told Benadryl to dry it up. Then we were told Claritin to dry it up another time. I'm not really sure which to use when so I always give our pediatrician a call and go by what they say then.

Zarbee's has a syrup that's safe for that age - our Ped recommends it. Honey could help too. Hope she feels better soon!

My pediatrician recommends benadryl at night to help them rest and dry up some mucus. It has worked really well for my kiddos. The cough is usually gone within 1-2 days. Humidifier helps too!

My pediatrician friend said honey is the only thing evidence based shown to work. We do "honey tea" (warm water and honey, she loves it). And I tried the hylands nighttime cough and cold. I don't know if it helped or not but it didn't hurt. But definitely try honey. When I had a cough I would get a spoonful for myself!

I think research shows that cough syrups just have a placebo effect. However, if DD has a bad cough we use this and I swear it works well.

This nighttime version helps them sleep - also recommended by our Ped. It has melatonin in it.

@Bao: dd1 went through a bad coughing fit a month or two ago. I have never given cough medicine because I don't believe they work and neither does my ped. He said they haven't been proven to work on kids. Not sure if either worked?We normally do eucalyptus oil in a cool most humidifier and vapor rub on the bottom of their feet. 90% of the time this works.

We use Chestal which is a honey based homeopathic syrup that seems to actually work. We also use another homeopathic brand recommended by the ped, but I've forgotten the name. It also seems to work.

Another vote for honey - we just give DS a small spoon of it. I don't think the effect lasts that long but it definitely seems to give some immediate relief.
