Just was wondering what everyone else thought about this case. A guy gives fresh sperm for free to people having trouble TTC . The FDA says he can't do that and calls him a sperm manufacturer since he puts it in a cup (I guess instead of a direct deposit) and is trying to put a huge fine on him or send him to jail for a year.

You cannot just give your bodily fluids away to people. Are these women considering diseases such as AIDS? I understand the desperation someone can feel when they cannot conceive but do they even care if he is carrying a genetic disorder that they may be carrying as well? Also who is guaranteeing the sterility of the vessel for the sperm? Craigslist? There is a reason that donors are put through rigorous tests. To let the desire for a baby outweigh the health of that baby or mother is seedy at best.

I don't really have a real opinion either way, but that line cracked me up.
If the mother to be is mentally stable and understands what she's contractually agreeing to, then I don't think it's anyone's business.

But babies are conceived all the time without looking at STD/genetic records. -
@Maysprout True, but many of them die of AIDS and other genetic diseases. The problem is they just seem to want to conceive, not conceive a healthy baby.

@ecogirl: He does test himself regularly for stds. and mom getting hiv from insemination is exceedingly rare even when no testing is present and never heard of baby getting hiv from dad . Not saying its a good risk, just saying sex is often much riskier

I think really dont respect the FDA very much. They would much rather endorse giant pharmaceutical companies with their dangerous drugs that end up being recalled after a year or two on the market

I'm from the medical field so I guess I'm just more prone to want to test for anything I can and ensure the health above all. I don't understand someone that wouldn't want every assurance available to them, especially if there seems to be some problem in conception. Testing sporadically or even however he considers regularly is no substitute for testing before every single donation.

I absolutely think this is a process that needs to be regulated. Just as Ecogirl said women who are desperate for a baby are extremely vulnerable. It's for their own protection that sperm donors be screened.
