Can you harmonize?

Can you harmonize?

Nope. I know how to do it in theory but I always end up back on the main melody.

Yes... I did a lot of musical theatre growing up, and as an alto voice often sang the harmony line. But I find it kind of show-offy when people do it in casual singing situations like that.

Yup. I was an a cappella nerd in college.
@Sapphiresun: agreed. Super awkward.

Oh yes. I've been singing in many capacities since I was really small. Mr. T and I like to sing two-part harmony for the girls. So fun to be married to someone else who likes to sing.
@MrsF: Fun! Me, too! I was in the girls chorus, and then the smaller group of four, and then an a capella group as well. I miss it!

Yep. I love it, though I wouldn't do it at a birthday party unless there were others joining in

I can't come up with a harmony all on my own, but once I hear it, I often sing along with the harmony rather than the melody. But only in my car, cuz I'm probably not that great at it, ha. Not with happy birthday at a birthday party. That seems weird.

I learned how to do it when I was in the choir at church. It's really hard, so I try once in a while in the car.

I can, not because of vocal experience but because of years of symphonic band. I think it's obnoxious at a birthday party though!

Sometimes, but not at the drop of a hat. I did a lot of music classes in school - but not as much singing, I get the gist of it but I'm not really a singer.

Yes sir! I was a professional singer and performer from childhood through my 20s and early 30s and I'm
Totally that dork who adds harmony to happy birthday or anything I can. It's more of a knee jerk reaction than showing off. Well a little bit showing off. I burnt out hard on the music scene though so my voice is more pitchy now than it once was.

@jhd: me too! I have a hard enough time just singing along with the melody
I love hearing people harmonize...it just sounds extra special at a birthday

Yep! Thanks to years of choir and ensemble performances, plus a crap ton of musical theatre.
There are some songs that I don't know the melody line to, because I've just always sung harmony.

Yep. I've been in 3 choirs, 2 full musical theatre productions and done lots of little duets.

Yep. I have a lot of vocal training.
But I agree with others that that would be awkward.
