LO rarely wakes up and plays. She usually goes from asleep to wailing for someone to get her out of the crib. I'm absolutely certain that most of the time she's not crying because she's still tired... She's a good sleeper. But it would be nice if she would wake up and play a bit before freaking out. Has anyone been able to teach their LO to play after waking?

We deal with this too. Leaving a small nightlight seems to help a bit but she still is crying.

DD, who just turned three, started to wake up happy around 2 or 2.5 years old. Now that she is older, we have a toddler alarm clock that means she has to stay in bed until it turns green. By doing this I find that she can wake up in her own time and get ready for me to come in. Sometimes she plays because she woke up early and sometimes she sleeps past the time, but she knows when she says "Mommy, I'm awake! Come get me" I will get her. She almost always wakes up happy now.
DS who is 14 months old, it is hit or miss. Sometimes I wake up to his babbling in his crib and sometimes it is crying. I wish I could get him to wake up and babble a while everyday.

do you leave any loveys or stuffed animals for her? my son often plays with these when he wakes.

@winniebee: She has one in each corner of the crib, but she tends to just throw them out of the crib or whip them around her head while she's crying. Occasionally she will talk to the doggy that's in there

@Weagle: My son is much more apt to lay and coo and play after a nap than on first wake these days. A lot of times, I think he's simply looking for a bottle immediately when he wakes up for the day.

I've noticed when my son wakes up on his own, he's in a better mood than when I have to wake him up.

I have stuffed animals in her crib. I put them in each corner and when she wake up shes usually cooing/talking to one of them. Sometimes she pulls on close to her and hugs it.

When LO was teeny tiny she would wake up crying for her bottle. But now that she's older she wakes up happy, it's not life or death anymore if she doesn't have something in her belly right away.
