My MIL said we needed to buy something to support a newborn's head. I thought you weren't supposed to put anything in the carseat? Are there any ones that are okay?

Nope...nothing in the car seat. It invalidates the safety rating.

Nothing in the car seat. Our Chicco key fit came with a newborn insert that supported his head fine.

We used a rolled up receiving blanket when DS was a newborn. It worked just fine. I didn't feel comfortable using any gear that didn't come with the car seat.

@Sweet T: did you just put it behind their neck? Or around their head?

Our hospital fits them with a rolled up blanket before you leave and shows you how to do it properly. Roll them up like tubes and wedge them on either side of her head to keep her from flopping around

LOL, our MIL said the same thing.
for our first one, we used a rolled up receiving blanket, but now for our 2nd one who is 1 month, we are using a goldbug 2-in-1 infant head support, i think we bought it for $5 from ross. i really like, and it fits her head just great. i just remember with our first, using the rolled up receiving blanket just got kinda annoying when it unraveled/moved around. glad we got the support. i too was a bit afraid to put anything into the car seat and safety restrictions with our 1st, but with our 2nd one, i think we're a lot more relaxed about the things we do, and we just make sure that common sense prevails.

@jedeve: I always put them next to his head. I've seen some parents use one on either side but we only needed one.
