Top five? I'll cheat a little and clump some together. Your hospital should give you post care tips (ours did not-really poor care) and his surgery might not be as extensive as what my DH had done (it was due to an accident, so lots of trauma). Some of these are not specific to leg injuries.

1. Pain: get on a pill taking schedule and set an alarm to avoid the pain getting ahead. Pain meds can cause constipation, so start something like Miralax before the problem occurs. Keep a bowl for throwing up nearby in case he's queasy from it all.

2. Location: couch is a good one. I set up sheets to change regularly to keep a fresh feeling. I bought a cheap little stand from Bed Bath and Beyond to keep things nearby for meals, etc. Close to electrical outlets and TV.

3. Mobility: We got home post surgery and I didn't know how to get him inside up the three steps b/c his leg had to be completely straight. Luckily our guy friends were there to carry him inside. We borrowed a walker to give him a break from crutches. My sedan was good for getting him around--a tall SUV might be trickier to get into. The less he had to move, the better, so I got him a container to urinate into. He fought this for one day, then was sadly grateful for it. Since he might be reclining more, straws are good for drinks.

4. Hygiene/personal care: everyone has different grunge tolerance levels, so this varies. Grab some of those facial clothes that don't require water or anything else he can use as he won't get to shower right away. I got him a stool to prop his leg up on when he had to sit down on the toilet so it could be straight. He had a leg scratcher.

5. Dealing with moods: DH was anxious about recovering. It became helpful to have the general healing timelines in mind so he could see he was on track. PT was brutal, and we would plan on having a stiff drink afterwards. It was hard for me not to hover and worry, but that didn't help things. He hated feeling incapable of basic care, like clipping his toenails.

I probably have more, but those were the things that came to mind right away!

@Cheert16: I forgot about clothing! And just remembered DH was nude bottom down and just kept a sheet over himself. Yeah, I'm guessing @Mrs. Tricycle's husband won't feel like doing that with his FIL! And come to think of it, maybe that's why I changed the sheets so often....
