Are there any Catholic Bees out there? Just curious!
Also, when are you/did you baptize your LO? We are thinking about doing it something like 2 weeks after they're born, so my parents could be there, but we'd probably have to register at a parish (just moved) and start classes ASAP, huh?

We're Catholic and we plan to baptize within the first month. I'm going to try and do the classes in the third tri!

I am! DD is getting baptized in a month (she'll be almost 4 months old) we are having her baptized at a cathedral and it's a long process compared to a regular church. DS was baptized at 6 weeks old though at our old regular parish. The classes usually take 2 weeks but at the cathedral they have classes for the god parents as well and a rehearsal.

We are and we did it at 2.5 months old. The day I gave birth we were supposed to go for the baptism education class, but obviously that didn't work out. So then we had to wait til the next class, which wasnt for 2 more months.

Most parishes require you to be a member for at least 3 months before baptism. (At least here in South Florida they do)
We're still trying to figure out how to choose Godparents and find a church!

We are! We had DD done at 6 weeks, and DS was 2.5 months. Dh, and I (and the kids' godparent) had to take the baptism classes; our parish recommended starting the process at 5-6 months, so we could make sure we had everything done in time. I scheduled DD's baptism in advance figuring that if I went the maximum 2 weeks over my due date, she would still be 3 weeks old; as it was, she came a week early so she was 6 weeks at the baptism. With DS, we scheduled it the same weekend as DD's 2nd birthday so we could do everything at the same time. We also had to turn DH and I's baptism/confirmation/marriage records, and the godmother had to turn in her records and proof that she had attended the baptism classes at her home parish.

My MIL thinks that the classes are SO absurd. But I don't think it's weird to prepare for a sacrament...

@jedeve: Lol, I thought the classes were a little redunant, but there were several people in our classes who were pretty uniformed about, well, almost everything! I think they make you take the clases so they can ensure you're prepared for the sacrament, since a lot of Catholics are casual or might have never been formally educated about the theology/faith.

I am! Unfortunately we are waiting until LO is about 6 months old, but only because that's the only time I could get my family out here (I'm in New York and they are in Indiana). I wish we could have done it earlier, but I am also very excited to have them all here for the Thanksgiving and baptism.

we're Catholic & planning to baptize as soon as we can / whenever they want to schedule it. our parish wants you to take classes during the second trimester.

Technically you are supposed to get it dont asap.
We did have to register and be members at our parish for three months so we are waiting for that to be able to baptize our dd.. she will be 6 months by then!

DH and I attend two different parishes, at mine the classes are on a rotation and you sign up for what works with your EDD, planning for a little cushion in the event LO isn't ready to be evicted 
I think there are 3-4 classes, just like an hour each. We are only 6w4d so I haven't looked too closely. My sponsor for RCIA was pregnant and delivered just before I got baptized so we talked about it a lot.
Definitely haven thought about godparents... My vote is for 2 of his cousins but I doubt they'd be able to come to the baptism... Idk, I'll cross that bridge in 5-6 months

We are Catholic, and are still trying to figure out the baptism. We have no idea who we'll ask to be Godparents, since many of our close friends and family members wither aren't Catholic or dom't practice. Our parish wants membership for a year (we've been there for two, though) and has not mentioned classes- but there are so few babies in the parish (I have seen a total of two in two years, and I think one was visiting) that I don't think they have a set schedule.

We're Catholic and pretty involved in our parish. We're due in December, and talked with our priest about doing the baptism in January. We're thinking maybe on the Baptism of the Lord, if that works for my family. We're struggling with godparents - it's so hard!

We're Catholic & active in our parish community. We had DD baptized @ 5 weeks & are hoping to have DS baptized around the same time when he is born around Christmas.

Godparents...that's another good topic.
Are you picking people who are religious? Family? Friends? We want to have family, but we don't have any siblings who really would play much of a religious role in the kids' life. Plus they all live out of our time zone, so I don't know who would be able to make it to the baptism. And we just moved so we don't have many close friends here either....

We chose my SIL; my family is not Catholic and not supportive of our religion. My SIL isn't practicing, but she was baptized/confirmed, and has agreed to participate in our kids' lives in that way. We live on the West Coast and she lives on the East Coast, but we managed to plan the baptisms around her work schedule, so she could still make it out. We only chose to have my SIL be a godmother, and we didn't choose a godfather, because we had a tough time deciding.

We're Catholic. Baby X was almost 4 weeks when we baptized him.
I think next time, we won't do the baptism in the morning (because trying to be somewhere by 9am when you're sleep deprived is too hard), we won't make the food ourselves (again, too much work with a newborn-- we'll cater next time), and possibly schedule it at 3 months or so when our heads aren't reeling so much from everything else. And when I'm a little more healed & getting around easier. OR we'll just not have a reception afterwards. Even keeping it simple and to just aunts/uncles/grandparents/cousins, it was 50 people and that was exhausting.

Choosing godparents was tough. We went for obvious choices this time around, but basically used up all 2 of our Catholic godparent options. The next kid will probably get a "token" Catholic godparent (one who satisfies the Church's requirements, but who we may not be as close with and who we may not expect to fulfill the role of godparent after the baptism is done), and then we'll invite Christian, non-Catholic friends & family to be witnesses (I think they're called?) to perform all the functions as godparents long term.

@red_seattle: Ugh I didn't even think about the party. Maybe we should wait. Although then I don't think my parents would be able to come? But I don't want to put off baby's baptism either, you know?

@jedeve: It might be do-able IF you really make yourself keep it simple, and cater it-- somewhere where you don't have to clean the house, cook the food, and clean up. But for me doing that with a newborn was really hard.

Since DH works out of town, we aren't able to do our baptism class until November 10...LO will be 3-4 months old when he is baptized. Our parish is pretty strict about you must be a member for at least 6 months prior to the class, and at least 1 Godparent must be Catholic. DH is Southern Baptist so it has been a little tough. No one in my family is still practicing except for me, so I don't know what we are going to do about Godparents since the Monsignor frowns upon Godparents not being Catholic. In my opinion...I would rather pick 2 great, fantastic, people to be Godparents just knowing they will do a great job with the role than just pick two people just because they are Catholic to be Godparents.

*Waves hand* Me! I am hoping our family baptism gown is still able to be used- there was talk of it going to a museum. but if that is the case we are going to have to have the baptism PRONTO because babies were so much smaller 100 years ago when the gown was made. But I have tons of time to figure that out... not out of the 1st tri yet.

@ParkerHaus: Congrats!! Also-- a 100+ yr old family baptism gown was one of the reasons we baptized so early. As it turned out, we didn't need to worry-- Baby X still would've fit the gown at 3 months I think. We could've left some of the buttons on the back undone if need be too.

I am Catholic and we will raise our child in the Catholic faith. Hubby isn't, but he likes my church and is all right with it. We aren't pregnant (again) yet, but hopefully, the next one will stick and we will be able to schedule a baptism. We've talked about godparents. I think we may ask my aunt. She's more like a best friend, not an aunt. There is also a really close friend that is very dear to me. I don't know who we will ask for the godfather.

@jedeve: It was important for me that the person be very respectful of the Catholic church and someone who I know will be in our lives forever. And I wanted it to be a male because my LO is a boy. So I chose my brother he is not married, so we went with just one godparent to keep it simple.

@red_seattle: I was super worried about mine not fitting into the family gown too. It was a pretty forgiving gown though, so we were fine. Phew.

We are lapsed enough to make it tough to get our girls baptized without a lot of effort on our part that we just don't have time for right now.
So hopefully my kids stay healthy so as to avoid limbo until we can get around to classes.
Our parish is the local cathedral so I think things are a little more strict than a regular parish.

I am! We moved right before LO was born so we couldn't take classes until after he was born. Even though nothing was new for my husband and me at the class, I like that parents take the classes! In my opinion, preparation for a sacrament is good thing.
We ended up having his baptism when he was almost 4 months old just because that was the first date all the grandparents were available to make the trip. After attending baptisms of friends' month old babies, I will be scheduling any future LO's as soon as I can because they slept through the whole thing while my baby cried the whole time during his! Oh the memories.
We are very blessed to have siblings who are practicing Catholics so his godparents are my sister and BIL. I would advise choosing godparents that will be exemplary role models in their faith AND you are very sure that they will stay in your life! My godparents were my parents friends at the time, but neither of them kept in touch. I'm excited that my LO will always know his godparents.

@Zuzu2and11: Agree. My godparents were coworkers of my dad, and they had huge problems in their working relationship through the years.
I would love it if we had someone close, at least!

@Meredithnyc: I am from Indiana (my family is still there) but also live in NYC now. Plus I am Catholic as well! Are you originally from Indiana? I don't meet too many Hoosiers in NYC.
