Thoughts?

Reading this made me want a drink. But I'm on the Mirena, so I can.

Heh. At first I thought this was satire. Both my kids wouldn't be here without my friend, Gin

I didn't read the article yet but my initial reaction is 'Oh for f*ck's sake!'
Should we all abstain from any strenuous activity, caffeine, deli meat, medicines, etc and basically just wrap ourselves in a plastic bubble unless we're certain there is zero chance of being pregnant as well?! Maybe women should stop working too and just stay home doing light housework during their fertile years, just in case!

Well, I'm screwed then -- I didn't know I was pregnant until after 5w, and I certainly wasn't abstaining

@blackbird: Sadly, this was not reported on The Onion.
Wow, it would sure be nice if there was an easy free source for birth control out there. Perhaps the CDC should discuss this with other areas of government.
I don't mean for this to become a discussion about PP practices, I just think this report being released while when PP is under fire is poor timing.
I'm going to go back to being a delicate desert flower now.

Come on....

I find some of the text on the infographics in that second link to be downright offensive.

According to the CDC's own numbers, 0.2 - 1.5 babies per 1000 are born with FAS. Seems like they could be spending their time pursuing more prevalent issues than slapping women on the wrist for living their lives rather than focusing on their potential as a baby vessel.

I look forward to seeing the CDC and all their alarmist followers sharing this article and sharing women getting right on board to offer better access to all women in the country to free reproductive healthcare and contraception. Oh wait.........

This is crazy. The only reason my daughter exists is because of a night of homemade grapefruit margaritas!
It also seems to be going by this assumption that as soon as you stop using birth control, a baby will just magically start growing. As lots of ladies on here know, sometimes it takes YEARS and much medical intervention to create a baby.

If this was actually followed the birth rate in the US would see a staggering decline....

Shouldn't everyone stop drinking by these standards??
My HMO "required" a drinking/lifestyle counseling session with baby #2. They told me drinking while pregnant was just as dangerous as meth. Huge eye roll. I hoped they weren't telling everyone that because the only impact that nugget of info had was making me curiouus about meth. Maybe it would have had more impact if it was baby #1.

@Truth Bombs: Ha! Agreed. My first thought before clicking the link was, "Are they worried about alcohol's effect on a fetus or are they just trying to prevent accidental pregnancies?"
persimmon / 1095 posts
That is just ridiculous. I drank until I found out I was pregnant and once I was in the last 6-8 weeks of my pregnancy I had an occasional (less than once a week) glass of wine or cider. I needed it at that point! That tiny bit did not hurt DD and she is perfectly fine.

@yoursilverlining: Ha, wouldn't that be nice?! But I won't hold my breath either....
I find this alarmist attitude towards alcohol to be pretty patronizing of women. Many studies have shown it's only significant drinking that has a negative effect, but it's like, "Oh, we can't trust these women! As soon as they have one drink they'll want five more. Better to just tell them not to drink at all." And I hate when people say, "Well isn't it just not worth the risk?" The point is, evidence suggests there is no risk.

I wish there was more conclusive research on the topic. There was that book by an *economist* that said drinking was okay, and since then I've noticed a lot of people saying "oh it's fine to drink, especially after the first trimester." When research actually shows it's more damaging to drink later in pregnancy. I kind of get where the CDC is coming from...half of the pregnancies in the US are unplanned. So you could be like me, not know you are pregnant, and have half a bottle of wine at 6 weeks. I think their point is that we don't know if it is okay to drink in the first trimester, and better safe than sorry. But they would be more effective if they found out first.

This makes me SMH. Also, if the embryo doesn't share blood supply until week 5-6 that should be plenty of time to figure out a positive test and stop drinking.
But to say you shouldn't drink before ovulation (uh, hello, how are babies made without alcohol!) and before implantation even occurs is just maddening.

My good friend that is trying to conceive texted me about this yesterday. Her husband is a doctor and he was all about following this advice. She was so annoyed. She's like so I need to quit drinking not just for the 9 mo of pregnancy but an indeterminate time prior as well?

@Ree723: right? While we're at it, include men, and cocaine, and wearing seatbelts etc etc. grump!

I was reading the frequently asked questions on cdc website and the question about drinking before said many women don't know they are pregnant until 4-6 weeks therefore they shouldn't drink before at all. So insulting to me.

@junebugsmama: Yes and it included all women ages 14-55.
pomelo / 5573 posts
Yeah, this isn't even talking just about women trying to get pregnant (and seriously, I spent 5 years trying to get pregnant. Should I have not drank at all during that time? Am I allowed to drink while I'm actively menstruating, is that still ok? What about when I'm being monitored and know that I haven't ovulated? Should I get a note from my doctor that it's ok?) but anybody who could possibly get pregnant. So infuriating.

@junebugsmama: Yes, try telling my 55 year old mother she shouldn't drink wine!
