I don't really have many memories of childhood... but the memories start when I was 4.
Do you think kids remember everything starting from a certain age?

My earliest memories are from Kindergarten! My memory still stinks to this day!
Not sure if my kids will have good memories or not

Yep...DS remembers a lot from when he was 4 and up. He doesn't remember some things, like all the kids in his preschool class, but he remembers the teacher and some of his closer friends.

@mrbee: I think they say kids start remembering around 3.5 years. Here's some interesting information on childhood amnesia. I find it fascinating that we can't remember our earliest days! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood_amnesia
Personally, I can remember when I was 3-4 but it's fuzzy. I have very clear memories starting around 5.

My paternal grandmother took care of me from birth until 3 years old so I would have dreams of our time together. I would then relay the dreams to my mom and she would confirm if it happened or not. Most of the time the elements in the dreams really was a past occurrence. Somehow they've become memories of the past too. It's hard to explain but basically whatever I remember of that time frame are from the visions in those dreams. Otherwise I don't think I could remember the timeline younger than 4.

He definitely won't remember everything. I remember random images from that age but not very many.

I remember things from 3 onwards--but I certainly wouldn't say "everything", more like a handful of things from each year.

Not sure if I do or not, but we promised DH's cousin's daughter we'd take her to Chuck E Cheese if she finished her dinner as bribe when she was 3. By the time she finished dinner, it was pretty late, so we said we'll go another time. A few months later she inquired with us on when we'd be taking her! We were surprised she even remembered!!
Disclosure: we have dinner at said child's home with her mom all the time. She took forever to eat and couldn't sit still so her mom was okay with us bribing her since we babysat her kids often. The promised outing was not out of the ordinary.

I can't remember everything. Um, I can barely remember the previous day sometimes.

I remember a lot from that age. Two of my brothers were born that year.

@Kimberlybee: I have dreams/"memories" even from when I was only a year old or so! I definitely have to ask my mom to confirm & they definitely don't happen as often as when I was younger; still pretty neat!

I remember a few things from 3+ on, but I don't remember everything that happened!

My DD remembers quite a lot of things at age 5 from past years but not all... It's very random, what she remembers. And something she remembered a few months ago, she may not remember now. That reminds me that I need to take more pictures so she can at least have that!

I remember monumental and significant events from 3 & 4. I remember my 4th birthday party very vividly and it was super special to me. I remember our babysitter at the time, and a few random events from that year. I remember moving to a new house at 4.5 and pretty much any somewhat significant event from then on.
I have a very vivid memory though and my siblings don't remember nearly as much as me!

I don't remember what I did yesterday... but I remember some things from ages 3-4.

Yep, I would actually say it's 3 and up! I don't remember every event, but I remember the emotions/feelings I had around that time period.

My brother was born when I was 3.5 and I don't have any memories from before he was born.
I have a few memories from ages 4 and on. I know they are real memories because it's things from school and not from home where my parents could have told me about the event happening.

@Mrs. Sunshine: Yes, it's so very neat! Those dreams/ memories have stopped for me all together but it's so cool to see into the past like that through dreams when I did have them. That's why when I hear people say that kids won't be affected or remember early childhood trauma or experiences, I have to negate that, they will remember it, from memory or through nightmares or dreams.

Same as @chopsuey: my bro and I started remembering things early on, but not everything.

I remember things (clearly) from age 2, but I'm weird I guess? Apparently that's not normal.

@Arden: me too! My brother was born when I was 2.5 and I remember my mom being pregnant and being with my grandfather when he used to come play/draw with me in the mornings when my brother was a newborn.
(Maybe it's a redhead thing )

I have several distinct memories prior to 4, but as a general rule life began at 4/5 lol.

Everything? No, but I do think he'll have some distinct memories of events, especially ones that happened frequently.
I have a lot of memories of my preschool, it was mixed 3/4 year olds, so I have no idea if I was 3 or 4 when these things happened.

I have a few very clear memories from when I was 4, but I definitely don't remember everything! My mom gets sad sometimes that I remember weird random things from when I was little (like the day it was raining outside the front of my preschool but not the back) and not special things we did together. haha sorry Mom!
nectarine / 2964 posts
not sure about everything but yes he'd be remembering stuff.
I have pieces of memories that is earlier than 4, I think. I still very vividly remember my mom instructing me to poop in the potty. LOL
It makes me sad to think about how LO doesn't remember any of this as of now (he's 2).

Not everything but this just made me think... it's kind of scary when they start remembering! Like, awesome and scary at the same time, that my kid is about to start remembering all the dumb stuff I say or whatever

@mamimami: Haha that's starting to happen, and it's making me nervous! Especially since Charlie will just share his memories with people outside the family now... so far it hasn't blown up too badly but I'm sure he'll say something embarrassing soon!!
papaya / 10343 posts
No. I have a few memories of when I was 3 and 4 but they are very very few. I don't feel like I had good recall on more than a small handful of memories until I was closer to age 6-7.
