I saw a fireplace door lock advertised..but I'm at a loss as to how to childproof the brick mantle (when we toured the house DD1, 2.5 years, almost gave me a heart attack on it).
easy, preferably cheap ideas - pictures are a bonus!

I wish I had pictures of it, but we have a full wall brick fireplace. DH built three pieces that cover the hearth. It's essentially two pieces of plywood at a 90 degree angle with 2 inch foam secured on the top and side. Then he stapled a nicer looking fabric around it. It's appealing and doesn't make our fireplace look unsightly.

this is the fire place - that thing to the right is like, a hole. I guess maybe for wood? tools? ha! I have no idea what I'm doing..I've never even used a fireplace.
edit: we are likely going to get a new set of doors and that rug will be coming out. so it'll be hardwood there, if that makes any difference.

@sorrycharlie: You could totally do this! I found a picture as well. Our hearth is like yours, only solid brick

Fireplaces are very common here and baby-proofing them usually means getting a fire guard:

It might be hard to block off the whole thing but just preventing access to the plinth and fire could work.

@2PeasinaPod: ohhh that just got me beyond excited for Christmas!! ha. now, stupid question I guess but can that come off easily? to light a fire?

@miramira: duh! I have a superyard. sigh. we won't need to use it for LO2 until she's much more mobile, so I could just position it in front of the fireplace when needed. Thanks!!!

@sorrycharlie: my in laws and SIL got those foam covers for the hearth. Our fireplace is on the ground, so we got a good screen!

We just put foam corners on the corners and watched him when he was around it. I've also seen people gate it off.

@sorrycharlie: Yes! Since it's the length of the whole wall, DH made it 3 pieces. The middle one is a little heavy, but I can take it on and off for when we want to build a fire.

Are you planning to use it? We have one we don't use, and it's just part of the wall as far as my daughter knows.

@sarac: We would like to. I'm more worried about her tripping and hitting her face on it, or playing on it and falling. She immediately zeroed in on it when we toured the house, and climbed into that open area to the right. Haha!
