I run an in home daycare. As every parent does, the first question asked when they come to pick up is "how was she/he today?". My question is, do you really want to know if your child was misbehaved and are you actually going to do something about. I usually just say she/he was fine. If there was an issue throughout the day I dont want the parent to think that im being, idk what word to even use besides for b*****. So my question is, when you pick your child up from daycare do you want the truth about how they behaved through the day?

@court_schaeff: Absolutely yes. You don't have to say it in an aggressive way but something like "Oh, little Johnny had some trouble sharing with his friends today, but we're working on it" should be said. How can the parent address issues if they don't know they exist? I expect my child care providers to be 100% open and honest with me and would be disappointed with anything less.

I think parents want to know the truth. But "fine" is true so long as there aren't any pressing issues!

Yes, I absolutely do. If my child is being a bully and pushing other kids around I need to know that so I can try to rectify that behavior.
If she's having a cranky day, I want to know. If she was clingy, I want to know.I wouldn't just assume that all parents think/want to hear their children are angels.

If I asked "how was she today" it would be in a generic form and I would mean:
was she happy?
was she "off"?
did she sleep?
did she eat?Now if there was an on going issue of pushing, talking back, being mean to others then YES I would want to know!

Yes I would really want to know as long as it weren't in an attacking way. "Your kid keeps hitting all the other kids" vs "A has been having some issues with hitting the other little ones lately, this is what we are doing to fix the issue so far, any other tips on how we could work on this together?" Adding in things before or after like "A was so funny today when she..." or "look at this picture she made!" It doesn't have to be all negative but should certainly be addressed.

I want to be able to address and work on whatever issues my LO might have. For example, if the pattern developed that my LO was not a good sharer, I would want to know that so that we could work on sharing at home, and talk more about sharing at home and focus on that. If I don’t hear anything but praise, then I can’t help to work out any negative behaviors my LO might be developing that impact others (including her daycare caregivers!)

Absolutely want to know! Agree with @Mamaof2: that it doesn't just mean behaviour — it means all of those things. We're thinking about them all day long, and when we pick them up, we want to know what kind of day they had. They can't tell us themselves
If there is a behaviour issue, I certainly want to know so that I can try to address it at home too.

I want some sort of information on how the day went. Often it is if he ate, pooped/peed, did he do something new, etc. Then some sort of idea of his attitude. If he did one thing and you took care of it eh I don't care. But if there was something consistent that was an issue I would want to know. For instance if he started hitting kids or was cranky in general I want to know. Because that could mean that something is wrong with him.

My son tells me what happened at daycare, as an example, he told me that he was pulling Lilly's hair. Turns out, it was Lilly pulling his hair.
Get in front of it while you can, knowledge is power and parents want to be informed. It makes me question why you wouln't want to share?

Oh yes! The hardest part for me about having LO in daycare is not knowing about her day. I always wish I could get more information.

Our daycare has a section on the report for "mood". Usually its just "happy" but its nice to know if she was tired or didn't nap well or even if she had trouble following directions.

Yes, I absolutely want to know. We're not at the real beahvior problems age yet, but it's important to me to know if DD was clingy or fussy or jealous or overtired. That can tell me a lot about what type of night to expect, whether she needs to go down early, whether she needs some extra snuggle time, whether she is coming down with a bug... Everything helps.

Yes, I'd want to know. If the childcare provider just said "she was fine" day after day, I'd start to wonder if she was actually paying attention to DD -- no kid is good all day, every day.

Definitely! I want information about how my kid is doing and what she is doing. I would be super annoyed to find out there was information that my daycare was not providing me.

I want to know everything. I want to know if he wasn't kind so that we can address the behavior. I want to know if he ate, how much, at what time. Did he nap well? How long?
I know Mrs. Wagon has shared her daycare's daily sheets and they are amazing! The provider fills out this sheet with notes about every child from everything concerning eating habits, what activities they did that day, their mood, naps, and even how many diaper changes they had. Parents want to be informed.

Yep! How can we work on things if we don't know the issues.
Same reason I always check in with what she plays with mostly, so I know what toys she likes and doesn't like. So I can get something similar at home.

Just wanted to add we already get a sheet that has every diaper change, every meal and how much she ate, and a section where they circle how her overall mood was, and how her overall appetite was. Plus a section where they write a "special moment". But STILL like to chat with her teachers for about ten minutes at the end of the day so I can get little more info on how she seemed to be feeling that day.

Most definitely! Like @MamaMoose: we get a sheet with basic info, but I always ask how she was/did, and I love it when they tell me more than 'fine'!

We get a daily sheet. It tells us the following:
Who were the care providers for the day
Diaper/Bathroom activities (time of day and what the activity was)
Meals/Snacks - noted how much was ate (we get a copy of the weekly menu)
Naptime (when/how long) 12pm - 2 hrs
A note about what she liked that day (she enjoyed dancing with a bean bag)
Mood - this is a series of check boxes where they check all that apply
Needs - series of check boxes for things like diapers, wipes, change of clothes, etc.We will ask questions if something on the sheet looks abnormal (why was nap short? What do you mean she seemed tired?). And they make sure to tell us if she's "off" - she wasn't herself today, she was quiet and reserved. She might be coming down with something.

Yes! I've had 4 different in home providers and our last one didn't provide any feedback unless he was really fussy. Our new ones provide a report card daily and I love it! It lets us know how much he slept, if he ate all of his food, and what they focused on (will be much more helpful the older he gets. He's almost 11 months and his letters and stuff, while good to learn, are mostly lost on him at this point).
As PP have said, it's mostly a was it a good day/bad day was he off was he happy sort of thing. Obviously if there was a behavioral issue, I'd want to know. But, my idea of the report card is mostly to just sort of keep track of how things are going on a daily basis. -
I pretty regularly pick up the little one that I nanny and I would really love to know the whole truth but I don't expect it from them. I want to know what kind of mood he was in, how long he cried when he was dropped off, how cranky he was, how much he slept, if he laid down for nap time, if he seemed like he was in pain, what kind of trouble he got into, how much energy he had, if he ate his food well, what made him happy today, if he had any minor injuries and falls, successes, new thins he picked up on. But they usually just tell me he had a good day and answer my pertinent questions - (messy diaper, sleep, and lunch?)
Eta : my own report then includes what kind of day we had (fun, adventurous, busy, cuddly, grouchy) and the reasons why, what activities he enjoyed, anything new he seems to be learning or working on, a funny story, his mood, and anything out of the norm in terms of sleeping/eating/pooping.

I would want to know everything! We get a full report (naps, food, diapers, mood, supplies needed) with an extra note (usually 1 sentence) at the bottom..
Most days I get "happy" notes like how she helped with the younger babies, did particularly well/enjoyed a certain task, etc.. But I do occasionally get notes about how LO had trouble keeping her hands out of her friend's hair, climbing and standing on the furniture, etc. hehehe..

@court_schaeff: When I worked in a daycare, I would be honest with the parents about their LO's behavior. They were always really appreciative. I made sure to deliver the news in a nice way, though. We did little daily summaries like how their diapers were and how they ate on a paper and I would always make sure to write something good they did or something they enjoyed sandwiching whatever the behavior was. I would usually sugar coat it like "Chase had some trouble sharing today" or "Tyler played a little rough with his classmates". I would expand on them when the parents would pick up and tell them whatever it was that happened. Parents want to know how their children are, they would get suspicious if their child always had good days!
I would just make sure you do the whole sandwich criticism thing, good thing, bad thing, good thing. Works every time.

@Bookish: @MamaMoose: Yes! I love the sheet/report, but I always (always!) make time to chat . . . in the morning for at least a minute or so (because it's much quieter in the a.m.), and in the afternoon. I like getting to know more about LO's day, and I like getting to know her teachers better as well!
